Throughout the preseason, coach Gregg Popovich has deflected questions aimed at handicapping what the team plans to do with its final roster spot — assuming the team plans to fill it at all. The Spurs must make at least three more cuts before the start of the season. With Curry, Powell and Brown all contributing positive things in spurts, Popovich believes the final roster decision will go down to the wire. “I think it will take a while,” Popovich said. “A couple of those guys will make it to the very end, I would imagine, if they keep playing the way they are now.” San Antonio Express-News |

CSNNW.com Marc J. Spears: Spurs have agreed to sign forward Derrick Brown to a one-year non-guaranteed deal, his agent Calvin Andrews told Y! Sports. Twitter Initially during the early stages of the free agency period, Brown was entertaining overseas offers, but shied away from that as an alternative in order to concentrate on landing an NBA job. Brown worked out for the Spurs a couple of weeks ago and according to sources, he has a good shot to make it past camp. CSNNW.com |

Not that this is anything major on the free-agent front, but the Bobcats are bringing back Derrick Brown, their former second-round pick. It's possible Brown will be signed in time to practice Saturday morning. A 6-7 forward out of Xavier, Brown can play part time at either forward spot. He's been in Charlotte, working out with various Bobcats, in the days leading up to the start of training camp. The Knicks extended a qualifying offer to forward Derrick Brown on Wednesday, making him a restricted free agent. The designation means that the Knicks will have the right to match any offer Brown receives, assuming the rules do not change substantially in the N.B.A.’s next labor deal. Free agency normally begins July 1, but the N.B.A. is expected to impose a lockout that will place all player transactions on hold indefinitely. It is unclear what effect the owners’ push for a new salary-cap system might have on free-agency rules. New York Times |

More roster tinkering, but still no 7-footers. The Knicks claimed 6-8 forward Derrick Brown off waivers from the Bobcats today after officially waiving Corey Brewer. Brown is another versatile forward who can provide some energy. The second-year player was averaging 3.7 points and 2.0 rebounds in 11.9 minutes per game this season with Charlotte. He's not much of a scorer, but he is a hustle/energy type which fits the mold of a Mike D'Antoni role player. It is a bit redundant, however, with Renaldo Balkman already on the team, plus Shelden Williams. Brown had 12 points and four rebounds in 24 minutes against the Knicks at the Garden on Nov. 23 and had four points and six boards in 21 minutes in the second game of that home-and-home at Charlotte. D'Antoni said Raymond Felton, who played with Brown in Charlotte last season, said the Knicks should grab him if he was ever available. Neither Brown, nor Jared Jeffries, who is expected to sign once he clears waivers this evening, will be available to play tonight against the Magic. Newsday The Knicks announced that they have claimed the 6-foot-8 Brown off waivers from the Charlotte Bobcats. Brown, a former second round pick, has averaged 3.4 points, 1.7 rebounds and 10.4 minutes in 98 games with the Bobcats. Yes, he is a project and you can be sure that Walsh's long-time friend, Larry Brown, was consulted on some level.
