HoopsHype Derrick Williams rumors

October 22, 2013 Updates

Timberwolves president Flip Saunders informed Williams on Tuesday morning that the team will pick up his contract option for next season, guaranteeing the $6.3 million on the deal. "I think everybody knows that if they didn't pick up my option I would have been unrestricted (free agent) and, basically, could have done whatever," Williams said after practice. "So it helps, the security. You're guaranteed at least one more year in the NBA, you know? And, as long as you have that, I think everything is good." ESPN.com

Derrick Williams' $6.3 million option for 2014-15 will be exercised, Wolves owner Glen Taylor confirmed to 1500ESPN.com contributor Darren Wolfson. Williams' future with the Minnesota Timberwolves has been a lingering storyline throughout the preseason. For now, at least one question surrounding Williams has been answered. 1500 ESPN

Minnesota is looking for a wing type guy to replace Budinger, but not sold they’d move Williams to get it. Also has Philly taking on a ton of cash, which is not what they are trying to do…. Make sense at the deadline when Charlotte has paid the bulk of Gordon’s deal. HoopsWorld

Even after spending $117 million in free agency in July and August, Minnesota Timberwolves president of operations Flip Saunders will have another sizable monetary decision to make. Before his third year begins -- Oct. 31 is the deadline -- the Wolves need to figure out if they will pay forward Derrick Williams $6.3 million for the 2014-15 season. In a phone conversation earlier this week spanning a few topics, Wolves owner Glen Taylor acknowledged the team isn't quite sure what to do. "We'll evaluate his summer program, and how he looks coming into camp (which starts Oct. 1)," Taylor said. "I heard he is looking good." 1500 ESPN

Do you think Derrick Williams can become an efficient post player? Shawn Respert: I think he can be very effective. He's not going to be a traditional post player like the ones you and I grew up watching. In the 80's and the 90's there were a lot of great post players who played with their backs to the basket. Derrick is kind of a new way of a post player who uses more face-up game, that posts up off the block, attacks with one or two dribbles... He does have to develop some type of a back-to-the-basket comfort level and gain confidence. What's most remarklable about Ricky Rubio, even at his age, is how he plays like an aggressive, confident, veteran ball player. When Derrick Williams learns that, we'll see a lot of improvement. He has all the physical tools. HoopsHype

Flip Saunders said he hasn’t been trying in any way to trade forward Derrick Williams to get a better draft choice. “I haven’t said anything about trading him,” he said. “That is something that has been speculative. That’s because last year it was pretty public, it came out of the organization that they were looking to trade him last year. It’s just a lot of speculation from the people, social media, everyone talking about trading him.” Minneapolis Star-Tribune

On the other hand Saunders said that anybody is tradable. “Wilt Chamberlain was traded, guys like Oscar Robertson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar got traded,” he said. “Anyone can be trade for the right price. But [Williams is] not a guy that we’re just out there looking to trade. He played well at the end of the year. If he was in the draft right now, he’d be a guy that would be one of the top three players that people would be looking at to draft. He’s only 21 years old. Sometimes you have to let those guys develop a little bit.” Minneapolis Star-Tribune
