Not long after telling media about how he learned of his new opportunity while shopping at Wal-Mart late Monday night, Garrett scored seven points, had five assists and played a key role in Utah’s first win of the 2013-14 season. “I was happy all night (Wednesday) night,” Garrett said, smiling before Thursday’s practice. “I won’t forget it.” Neither will his new team and fans. “Everybody in this locker room knew what he was capable of doing,” Jazz small forward Marvin Williams said. “He really stepped up. He was a monster (Wednesday). He was huge.” Deseret News

After spending his first NBA season in Phoenix, making his Suns debut against the World Champion Miami Heat and enjoying the amenities that the big leagues has to offer, Garrett was assigned to the D-League’s Bakersfield Jam to receive some extended playing time. At the end of his days in Bakersfield, Garrett would stare out of his hotel window and would wonder to himself, "Is this where 'Walking Dead' took place?" “It’s so dead,” the first-year guard said. “Nobody was walking around or anything.” NBA.com

Besides showering and sleeping in the hotel, Garrett spent almost his entire day at the gym. There was practice and watching film in the morning, more shooting and film in the afternoon and even more video and studying the scouting report at night. The amount of film screened in the D-League is even greater than what is watched in the NBA. The first video session is used so the players can learn their opponents' tendencies, the second session is used to break down plays and the third session is of the last time the two teams met. Once relatively settled with 13 guaranteed contracts, the Suns likely will stage a battle for another roster spot in light of the expectation that Channing Frye's enlarged heart will sideline him for the season. The Suns have invited NBA veteran power forward/center Solomon Jones, power forward/center Luke Zeller, swingman Othyus Jeffers and point guard Diante Garrett to training camp, which opens Tuesday with the first of four consecutive two-a-day sessions at UC-San Diego. The camp, which is closed to the public, will conclude Saturday with an intrasquad scrimmage before the Suns return to Phoenix to prepare for their Oct. 10 preseason opener at Sacramento.
