Point guard Augustin becomes a restricted free agent in July, and he and rookie Kemba Walker are similar in size and skill set. Sources indicate the Bobcats spoke with the Blazers, Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder, among other teams, about possibly dealing Augustin. “D.J. Augustin is our starting point guard and we like him a lot,’’ Higgins said. “We tried to extend (his contract) back in December. Now, on July 1, he’ll be a restricted free agent and that will dictate what happens next.’’ Charlotte Observer Royce Young: According to a source, the Thunder had some discussions with Charlotte about D.J. Augustin, but that was it. Twitter Sean Cunningham: Although unconfirmed by Sac, heard the Kings had inquired about Bobcats PG DJ Augustin. Most intriguing Kings related rumor I've heard Twitter Adrian Wojnarowski: The Lakers had been discussing a possible D.J Augustine trade with Charlotte before cutting the deal for Sessions, league sources tell Y! I confirmed David Aldridge’s nba.com report that the Portland Trail Blazers have interest in D.J. Augustin and such a deal could involve Jamal Crawford as a Bobcat. Don’t know if that will happen, but it’s clear Augustin – a restricted free agent-to-be – is available for the right price. Charlotte Observer |

![]() So, now, according to a source, there's a chance Crawford winds up with the Bobcats in a potential deal for guard D.J. Augustin. Augustin has played just fine this season, but he's expendable now that Kemba Walker is there. NBA.com Sean Deveney: If Bobcats deal DJ Augustin, source says they'd need to dump a bad contract with him: Maggette or Diop. Ty Thomas' contract is untradeable. Twitter |

The Bobcats continue to say DJ Augustin is not going anywhere, but sources close to several teams say he is available. DJ is playing some solid basketball recently averaging close to 13 points and 6 assists per game. However it’s becoming clear that DJ could be sold off if it returns the right pieces in exchange. HoopsWorld Charlotte Bobcats point guard D.J. Augustin played through three ankle sprains the first dozen games of this NBA season. He knows the difference between a little pain and a debilitating injury. The right big-toe injury Augustin has suffered is debilitating. So much so that Augustin likely won't play in any of the upcoming four road games that start Tuesday against the Lakers in Los Angeles. In an exclusive interview Sunday with the Observer, Augustin said sitting out now is necessary, not only to this season, but potentially to protecting his career. "If I try to come back and play on it too soon, I'll be right back where I was last week," said Augustin, who missed the last four games, all losses. "I don't want to play on it, make it worse, and maybe be out the rest of the year - hurt my career with something serious." Charlotte Observer |

![]() Charlotte Bobcats point guard D.J. Augustin will miss at least the next four games (over the next five nights) after getting a second diagnosis on inflammation in his right big toe. Charlotte physician Dr. Bob Anderson examined the injury, and Augustin will go through electric stimulation and other therapies, rather than the injection initially suggested when Augustin was examined in New Jersey Sunday night. Augustin, the Bobcats' assist leader and second-leading scorer, had to leave in the first quarter of a 97-87 loss to the New Jersey Nets. Augustin has suffered from chronic pain for about 10 days, and it became so severe about six and a half minutes into the game that he sat down for the night. "It's two bones in my big toe, and it's kind of cracked," Augustin told the Observer. "The shot would fill in the crack, and give it time to heal -- take some of the pain away." Augustin said that every time he's pushed off lately, he feels severe discomfort. The foot finally gave way in the first quarter when he lost the ball out of bounds during the Bobcats' fourth-straight loss. "The pain was too bad -- I just couldn't get (the ball) back, it hurt so bad," Augustin recalled. Charlotte Observer |

![]() Rick Bonnell: #Bobcats will not be extending D.J. Augustin or D.J. White before the deadline. That means each eventually becomes a restricted FA. Twitter As for other 2008 draftees eligible for extension, sources say the most likely candidates to receive them are Kevin Love (Timberwolves), Ryan Anderson (Magic), Danilo Gallinari (Nuggets) and Nicolas Batum (Trail Blazers). Also possibilities are Roy Hibbert (Pacers), D.J. Augustin (Bobcats) and Jerryd Bayless (Raptors); and an interesting one will be Eric Gordon with the league-owned Hornets. Minnesota has offered Love, averaging 25.2 points and 14.5 rebounds, a four-year max deal worth $60 million. The hope is that Love will accept the four-year extension and allow small-market Minnesota to save the five-year extension for Ricky Rubio. CBSSports.com |

![]() A group of eight NBA players went to Hawaii last week and hefted real M16s in a simulated firefight, got up close with an array of makeshift bombs, heard the coordinates barked for a desert air raid and ran in a stuffy, dimly-lit gym or two with soldiers either just back from, or headed to, Afghanistan and Iraq. Along the way, they showed that, despite the NBA lockout, the league still cares. Or at least some of its players do. The eight players -- Derrick Rose, Al Horford, Brook and Robin Lopez, Tyreke Evans, JaVale McGee, Mike Miller and D.J. Augustin -- did all that as part of a four-day USO tour of Oahu, the first featuring current professional athletes. They met with, and performed for, military personnel at Hickam Air Force Base and the U.S. Army's Schofield Barracks. ESPN.com "I don't think any one of us knew what we were getting into," Horford said. "I know I didn't. I just heard 'Hawaii' and said, 'Sign me up!' I couldn't have imagined the connection we'd make with all these troops, bonding with them just by talking about sports and family. Hanging out with the kids in the clinic was probably what I liked the most." The two clinics drew hundreds of kids, almost all of whom had never seen an NBA star in person, much less shook his hand and received a lesson in how to play the game. Then again, the instruction became secondary after the players realized these were kids who had not seen at least one of their parents in months and had no idea when or if they'd see them again. ESPN.com "Let's be honest, when we came over here we didn't really know that much about the troops and what they go through, leaving their families, Skyping with their kids, risking their lives every day," Rose said. "We leave our families and we're on the road and we face a lot of pressure, but it's not even close to what they deal with. And they're our age or even younger. It's amazing to meet them and talk with them and it definitely makes you feel you shouldn't take anything for granted." The eight players didn't just make their obligatory appearances, either. Brook Lopez, the Nets center, went to lunch and toured Honolulu with a soldier who shared his affinity for comic books. He also donned a padded jacket for a firsthand taste, despite protests by advisers, of what it's like to be attacked by a trained military canine. (Memo to Nets GM Billy King: He's fine. Not even a scratch.) ESPN.com |

Charlotte Bobcats coach Paul Silas is serious about playing guards D.J. Augustin and Kemba Walker together at times next season. To overcome the height disadvantage that would create, Silas plans to install a zone defense whenever the lockout ends and training camp begins. Silas isn't allowed to talk specifically about players during the lockout. But there was no doubt who he meant Thursday when he said, "I'm going to have two little guys out there who I really think can hopefully play together. But it's going to be hard for (either of) them to guard a 2-guard. "But they can play a zone ... out-front, I think.'' Charlotte Observer |

According to a source, the Bobcats really like Walker. But the problem is that they also really like their current point guard, DJ Augustin. They would certainly consider Walker at No. 9 if he was available, but they would also strongly consider passing him up. The Bobcats have a lot of needs, and point guard is the one position they're actually happy with, according to a source. The Hoops Report |
