HoopsHype Donatas Motiejunas rumors

January 26, 2014 Updates

The Rockets are receiving “lots of calls” about Donatas Motiejunas, who asked to be traded in search of more playing time. However, the Rockets prefer to keep him. “Teams are opportunistic. Any player that other teams like and think is good and that’s not playing, generally that’s who you get calls on. We’ve gotten a lot of calls on Donatas because he’s a mobile 7-footer with offensive skill. He’s not a perfect player, but because he wasn’t playing, teams are like ‘Maybe we can get him on the cheap’. “We believe in him. I expect him to be here. The reality is, it’s very hard to get a 7-footer who can play as well as him on a $1 million contract.” Clutchfans

Sam Smith: I have not heard they are shopping Motiejunas. I would be surprised if they were as he’s a young seven footer and it’s obvious they are trying to trade Asik. If someone wanted to trade the Bulls a young, athletic seven footer for one of their veterans I have no doubt they’d be thrilled. I don’t expect that to happen. NBA.com

The second-year forward out of Lithuania admitted to ClutchFans on Wednesday that his agent Arn Tellem is working with Rockets GM Daryl Morey to find a place where he can play. He called it a “natural thing” and that his agent is just looking out for him. “It’s still one month or more until the deadline,” said Motiejunas. “Anything can happen. You never know. It’s not up to me.” Clutchfans

“Right now I don’t feel that I’m improving,” said D-Mo. “I don’t have a game rhythm. It’s not easy when I sit on the bench for that long.” Motiejunas stressed that if he stays here, he will continue to work hard every day as he has. “That’s the thing — I like it here,” said Motiejunas. “But it’s not in my control. I think I did everything in my power to get on the court. If it’s not happening then it’s not happening [but] the management, Daryl has to try to find a place where I can develop.” Clutchfans

Donatas Motiejunas' struggle to earn a spot in Houston Rockets rotation continues. The 23-year-old was sent by the Rockets to NBA D-League for the first time this season and the third in two years. Lithuanian international hoped to be traded to another NBA team with Boston Celtics rumoured to the most likely destination. However, the deal didn't go through keeping D-Mo in Houston for the time being. TalkBasket

Last season's rookies - Terrence Jones and Donatas Motiejunas - continue to show promise offensively, but neither appears ready on the other end to be trusted with the job. The Rockets remain hopeful about both. They plan to pick up their contract options for the third season of their rookie deals this month, a person with knowledge of the team's plans said. But the Rockets don't appear ready to put either in the position, trying Omri Casspi as the starter against Orlando on Wednesday in an indication the starting spot is up for grabs. Houston Chronicle

In part two of RidiculousUpside.com's interview with Rockets Vice President of Basketball Operations, Gersson Rosas, (here's part one to review) the executive discusses each rookie's progress, and the strategy behind their assignments. For more, read on below. Q: As we talk about specific player development, what can you tell me about the progress Terrence Jones and Donatas Montiejunas are making with the D-League Vipers? A: Terrence Jones is a very special player with a lot of physical tools and good talent base. Both he and Donatas Montiejunas are guys who have played at high levels. Terrence won an NCAA title at Kentucky, and Donatas played at a high level in Europe last season. Both of those guys are very close to playing in the NBA, but we have a lot depth with the Rockets, so they just haven't had the opportunity to play yet. Ridiculous Upside

Sources say the Rockets are contemplating sending White to the D-League along with rookies Scott Machado and Donatas Motiejunas. But White has been absent from team's past two practices and Monday night's game against Miami. The Rockets reportedly are fining him every day he is absent from team functions or fails to attend sessions with the therapist the Rockets have arranged for him. CBSSports.com

In a rather unexpected move the Houston Rockets have decided to send Donatas Motiejunas to their NBDL team, alongside two other teammates. Motiejunas will now have to spend an undetermined period of time playing for Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Houston's own D-League team. The other two players who were also sent there are Royce White and Scott Machado. It is worth mentioning that Motiejunas had declined an invitation from the Lithuanian National Team last summer, in order to put extra work with the Rockets. Hence missing the chance to participate in the Olympic Basketball Tournament. TalkBasket
