Richard Jefferson: “I have no plans. I’m going to a wedding in Phoenix and coming back here. My house is under construction in L.A., so I can’t go there. So I’m just going to lay low and get ready for the final stretch of the season. I know, it’s disappointing.” Dwight Powell: “I’m going to L.A. My girlfriend lives out there. I’ll go for the weekend.” Mark Cuban: “I’ll be up there [in New York] for a technology conference. Take the kids up there and hang out. The kids want to see snow. When the Celtics agreed to trade Rajon Rondo to Dallas, they knew they were giving up the best player in the deal. Still, among the particulars haggled over between the two franchise, was whether rookie Dwight Powell would be included in the deal. Powell, acquired by Boston this past summer from Cleveland, was coveted by Dallas. The Mavericks insisted he be part of this deal. "One guy we know is going to help us right away in Rajon Rondo and one guy Dwight Powell who we had in draft workouts last year and a guy that they didn't want to give up," said Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban watched his team start 19-7, lead the league in scoring and field goal percentage and register several routs. And he knew the Mavericks simply weren’t good enough to contend at the top of the Western Conference. “We needed to be better defensively,” Cuban said, following Friday evening’s news conference with new additions Rajon Rondo and Dwight Powell. “I mean, teams were walking in and shooting better at the 3 than they were in the gym by themselves. So that had to change and stop. “We didn’t have a lot of length at the point guard position, either. We needed to get a lot taller or a lot longer. Rajon’s the best of both. He’s not taller, but he’s so long that he’s as good as 6-4 or 6-5, so he can guard much bigger.” Boston Herald
