HoopsHype Europe rumors

November 15, 2014 Updates

PT: Do you see a day when there's an NBA team in Europe? Have you had conversations where players seem in favor of that? MR: Yes and yes. I think the league has an interest in seeing the game grow, and I think the players do. Our players routinely, if things aren't going well, or for whatever reason, end up playing in Europe and then come back here. Our women -- it's remarkable, they spend more time playing overseas than they spend playing at home. And sadly, some of the 18-year-olds who aren't able to make money here are playing overseas. There's more work, more opportunities to play basketball. ESPN.com

The National Basketball Association will consider basing teams in Europe if the arenas are up to league standards, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. The NBA would have to weigh the benefits of increasing the size of the 30-team league against possible costs, such as spreading television revenue among more partners, Silver said in an interview with Bloomberg TV yesterday. More likely for now is that the NBA will allow advertising on team jerseys, said Silver, who was on his second visit to China since becoming commissioner in February. Ads on uniforms will boost the NBA’s global growth, he said. “It would cause a whole host of companies to become that much more invested in the NBA,” Silver said. “Just think about it -- if there was a Chinese company that was represented on an NBA jersey, and for the affinity of Chinese fans to see that familiar brand on an NBA team -- that’s going to help grow the game here.” Bloomberg

Jackson exists in a weird purgatory, stuck in the NBA D-League with the Idaho Stampede. The Pelicans have not renounced his draft rights, which would make him a free agent, and they haven't signed him, even after an injury to Jrue Holiday. He can't be called up by another team. He can't sign with another team. All he can do is work on his game in the D-League and hope something, anything happens before he's forced to head to Europe for the money. "(Europe's) on the back of my mind," Jackson told CBSSports.com over All-Star Weekend. "My family needs the money. I need to provide for my family so whatever I have to do, I'll have to. "The NBA's always been my dream, and I think I'm good enough to play there. But the way the cards are dealt, I may have to go overseas for my career." CBSSports.com

Euroleague CEO Jordi Bertomeu was present in Athens, Greece, and before the game between Olympiacos and Anadolu Efes he spoke about almost every matter of Euroleague. However the most important part of the press conference was the way he presented the possible expansion of the NBA to Europe under the terms of the American league as almost an impossible plan. That’s why according to him the cooperation with Euroleague should be considered the only way for this to be done. Jordi Bertomeu: “My answer is the same with David Stern’s answers. Every time this subject comes up, he says that he will think about it for the next ten years and every one starts to talk about it. In order for the NBA to come, there should be 5-6 really strong teams in Europe in league with a 130 million USD financial turnover. That means tickets which will cost 100 euros per average and at least 150 sold outs. Our television partners should pay ten times more for the rights. And we also have to answer how the salary cup will work under a possible six different taxation laws. There are many legal issues. A lot of people talks about NBA in Europe, but not about those matters. My place is to give answers. It’s easy to make the questions. Adam Silver, the new commissioner, is a great contributor to the sport. We have met and I think that we have a future together. We want to increase our cooperation and we want to see things realistically”. EuroHoops.net
