Fabricio Oberto, the starting center on the Spurs’ 2007 title team, was at practice Wednesday doing some work for a TV network that is sending features back to Argentina about the Spurs and Manu Ginobili. The sixth man is the undisputed star of the “golden generation” Argentina national team that won the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. One of the most popular teammates in recent Spurs history, Oberto visited with old friends, former teammates and media members still around from his playing days. Oberto walked off the court with Tim Duncan, his frontcourt mate from 2005-09. “Absolutely great to see him,” Duncan said. “One of the all-time greats.” San Antonio Express-News

Former San Antonio Spurs center Fabricio Oberto may be done with basketball but his time in the NBA, and international play will live on in Argentina. Oberto has opened up a museum in Cordoba, Argentina (via Argentinean site Uno Entrerios) showcasing his pro basketball career including his Spurs jerseys, replicas of the 2007 NBA championship trophy he won as a Spur, his Olympic medals and various awards he won. However, Oberto's Chicago-based agent, Herb Rudoy, told me that the reports stating Oberto and the Bulls are close to a deal and that both parties are interested in each other do not carry much weight. "[There is] no truth to this," Rudoy wrote in an email exchange Tuesday afternoon, when asked about the rumors involving Oberto and the Bulls. chicagonow.com

If he can't end up playing in the NBA, Europe can be the second option. Ole

From the looks of it, San Antonio Spurs' Manu Ginobili and his former teammates Fabricio Oberto and Brent Barry have formed the closest thing the NBA will ever to a boy band (we'll NEVER see LeBron, Wade and Bosh take a picture like this). Actually Barry made a trip to Argentina to hang out with Fab and Manu and Fab documented the highlights of "Bones'" trip on Twitter. Not sure what exactly is happening here, but if Barry is involved I support it. The rest of the trip looks pretty damn cool. Many of the pictures include Fab and "Bones" hanging out backstage with Pearl Jam. My favorite is this gem featuring Oberto and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready. Are there any musicians or actors besides Charlize Theron that are tall? ProjectSpurs.com

One of the most popular players in Argentine basketball history, Oberto suited up for the first game of the tournament. During pregame introductions, the ovation he received equaled those for both Ginobili and Scola, the team’s biggest stars. “It was amazing,” he said. “My legs were shaking when they cheered my name. I’m really thankful for how they treated me, and I will try to give all that love back inside the court.” Finally, before Game 2 of the tournament, against Uruguay, Oberto got the news he had hoped to hear: Team doctors and athletic trainers again had cleared him for action. “I think I will play only five minutes,” he said before that game, “but I will be happy just to be on the court.” San Antonio Express-News
