Everything hinges, obviously, on the resolution of coach Tom Thibodeau's future (or lack thereof) with the team. Almost no one expects he'll be back for the final two years of his contract, the relationship between him and the team's front office, seemingly, irrevocably broken. When and if Thibodeau is removed, the question of succession will determine the Bulls' future. Iowa State's Fred Hoiberg has been linked to the Chicago job for months, with good reason -- "The Mayor" was a well-liked player and teammate at each of his three NBA stops over a decade-long career, and has made a seamless transition to coaching. Or could the Bulls pull a 180 and bring in a go-go offensive mind like Mike D'Antoni -- the front-runner in Chicago five years ago before, at the last minute, negotiations broke down? NBA.com

It's been five days since the Bulls were eliminated from the playoffs, and there has been no movement in their head coaching standoff with Tom Thibodeau. The Chicago front office has yet to formally contact its top target, Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg, and no NBA team has requested permission to speak with Thibodeau, a league source told CBSSports.com Wednesday. As we've discussed, this isn't going to be quick or easy. CBSSports.com

As for Holberg, he has long been linked to his former team and is tight with Bulls GM Gar Forman. Sources told SNY.tv the Bulls have already talked to Holberg this season. “He has always said from day one that his lifelong goal has been to coach in the NBA,” Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said of Holberg, according to the Ames Tribune’s Travis Hines. “It’s for him to decide when that part of his life he wants to activate. Now it’s just strictly a decision for him and their family personally, not what he wants to do because he’s made that clear. [The NBA is] what he wants to do. It’s a matter of when he wants to do it.” ZagsBlog.com

Luring Hoiberg out of his beloved Ames, Iowa, and the tremendous comfort zone he has in the college game doesn't figure to be so simple. Especially not after Hoiberg so recently found himself hospitalized to undergo his second major heart procedure in the span of a decade. But the Bulls are said to like their chances, presumably thanks to the fact that Hoiberg and Forman -- in stark contrast to Thibodeau's relationship with management -- are said to be good pals. Friends to the point that, as legend has it, Forman bought Hoiberg's old house in Chicago. ESPN.com

Yes, the Bulls have a real good shot now. And the best chance that they'll ever have to win a title here would be with Thibodeau – as terrific of a coach as Iowa State's Fred Hoiberg, management's choice to ultimately be the replacement. The Orlando Magic are waiting to watch what happens at season's end, league sources said, waiting to see how the team and coach dissolve the remaining two years on his contract and separate. Yahoo! Iowa State men's basketball coach Fred Hoiberg will undergo another open heart surgery, this one on April 17 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., according to a Friday news release from the athletic department. Hoiberg knew this procedure was coming; he even mentioned it occasionally during informal sessions with reporters throughout last basketball season. The date was the only public unknown. "After my initial surgery to replace my aortic root 10 years ago, I knew that this was something that would need to be done at some point," Hoiberg said. "My valve has severe regurgitation and the time has come to get it replaced. I am hopeful that this will be my last surgery and I'm looking forward to getting this behind me." Des Moines Register

It is widely -- and I mean widely -- believed throughout the league that Fred Hoiberg, whose Iowa State Cyclones were bounced in the first round of the tournament Thursday by UAB, is the top choice of the Chicago Bulls to replace Tom Thibodeau in the event that the Bulls and Thibs indeed part company at season's end. Kevin Arnovitz: Sense in NBA is that Hoiberg would be uber-selective about picking a gig. Won't fall into trap NCAA coaches have in past of taking any job. Twitter @kevinarnovitz
