Whenever he recovers from the arthroscopic right knee surgery he underwent on Jan. 17, Gal Mekel’s first game on his comeback trail will be in Frisco, where he’ll play for the Texas Legends of the NBA Development League. The rookie from Israel has played in just 30 games this season and is averaging 2.4 points and 2.1 assists in 9.6 minutes per game. He also is shooting only 34.5 percent from the field, including 25.0 percent on 3-point shots. “He’s making steady progress,” Carlisle said. “I would say he’s ahead of schedule based on what the expectations were with the scope. Guard Gal Mekel is busy going through his rehab. But the Dallas Mavericks have no timetable set for his return. Mekel underwent surgery on his right knee on Jan. 17, and coach Rick Carlisle has no idea when the rookie from Israel will be able to play again. “He’s on the court shooting and doing some light running and so I would say that he’s on schedule or ahead of schedule,’’ Carlisle said Monday. “I just don’t know what the schedule is.’’ Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Are you watching Israel at the Eurobasket? Gal Mekel: Yes, of course I'm watching. So how do you feel about the fact you're not there and they are struggling a little bit? Gal Mekel: I cheer for them and I really want them to be successful. It was a tough decision for me to not go to the Eurobasket this year because in Israel we're very proud of the National Team and I love to play with the National Team. But I spoke with a lot of guys, players including [Omri] Casspi, who have been in this situation, and everybody was telling me that the rookie season is something very, very important. And even more important is the preparation for the rookie season. It will be the first time that I have to play an 82-game season, so I want to be 100 percent ready. I definitely know me being here in Dallas and spending time with coach [Rick] Carlisle, the coaching staff, preparing for the season a few months before the training camp will help me a lot. Eventually if I become a good NBA player and play a lot of years here, Israeli basketball and the National Team will benefit from this. HoopsHype
