The Pelicans signed Mekel to a two-year, non-guaranteed contract on Friday. He participated in his first shootaround with the team on Saturday morning at USC's Galen Center and will be available to play against the Los Angeles Clippers. ''Potentially he has the ability to be a true point guard,'' Williams said Saturday. ''I've done some research on him; talked to his former coach. Everything comes back in that regard that he's more of a facilitator than a scorer. ''I like that he can pass. He puts his passes on the button. He's a big guard. I like the way he ran Dallas team in the preseason and maybe he's grown up as a player. New Orleans Times-Picayune

The Indiana Pacers are working to complete the signing of free-agent guard A.J. Price after abandoning plans to sign Gal Mekel because of a procedural snag with Mekel's visa, according to league sources. Sources told ESPN.com that the Pacers, after Wednesday flying Mekel to Boston so he could meet the team there Thursday, pulled out of a deal to sign the Israeli point guard upon learning that Mekel's visa that allows him to play in the NBA would likely not be renewed until Friday in the wake of his recent release by the Dallas Mavericks. The Pacers, sources said, then moved onto Price, who spent his first three NBA seasons in Indiana and became a free agent this week after his recent release by the Cleveland Cavaliers. ESPN.com
