Petrie is in the last year of his contract, and people close to him and the Maloofs say it's all but certain that his 19-year run with the Kings will come to an end this summer. Even if the Maloofs surprised all involved and offered Petrie a new deal, one person close to the 64-year-old said they were "99.9% sure he wouldn't take it" because of his desire to retire. Petrie declined a request for an interview. USA Today |

There's a growing sense among potential suitors that under-fire Kings general manager Geoff Petrie, who has overseen zero trips to the playoffs under five coaches in the six-plus seasons since Rick Adelman left town, would be willing to move Cousins, preferably in exchange for a dependable veteran of quality or two who could bring some instant improvement to a franchise stuck in lottery land and still plagued by an uncertain future in terms of where this team will be calling home in the long term. The decision to sit Cousins was mutually agreed to by both head coach Keith Smart and President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. Smart said the team would revisit the possibility of bringing back the 22-year-old “after a couple of days or so.” “Like I said, all along I’m trying to create an environment here,” Smart told reporters after Saturday practice. ”And we all gotta move forward to making sure that we do everything we can to keep that environment in the right direction. And when any player goes beyond that, then there’s going to be consequences to that. And I thought last night, it moved in that direction.” Cowbell Kingdom |

The Kings rank in the bottom third of the NBA in every major offensive category except free-throw percentage. All the talent has yet to learn how to play together. Barring roster moves, this group has to learn how to do that or the improvements the team has shown on defense will be for naught. "I think as a group we're all disappointed with the record we have at this point," Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie said. "We certainly had aspirations we'd have a better start than this, especially with the homestand we had in November." Sacramento Bee |

Geoff Petrie's future is far more unclear. The longtime president of basketball operations is in the final year of his deal and fans and local media have been calling for his head. Even his most ardent supporters admit that this roster he built is full of pieces that just don't seem to fit. USA Today |

![]() The team's lack of improvement and charisma have left Petrie with few allies among the owners. His contract expires at the end of the season, and if the trend continues, he could be gone within weeks. The Maloofs wholeheartedly endorse Keith Smart and are adamantly opposed to firing another coach. Sacramento Bee |

Geoff Petrie on if roster changes need to be made: "I think in the short term you have to give it a little more time. And maybe there are different lineup combinations that will work better, maybe there are different rotations that will work better. But at some point those things have to be open for discussion. I don't think this early in the season any teams are looking to be aggressive and make changes." Sacramento Bee |

Under Petrie, the NBA's longest-tenured top basketball executive, the Kings have missed the playoffs for six consecutive seasons; four coaches have been scorched in the process, with Keith Smart's job security suddenly not so secure; the slow start has dampened preseason enthusiasm and furthered the belief that the Maloofs don't care and Smart can't coach, and that Petrie's Princeton pedigree notwithstanding, he is no longer the brains behind a highly successful venture. (NBA scouts summarized the Kings as a low-IQ roster that lacks a floor leader/facilitator, and has too many small guards and duplicating small forwards, a dearth of perimeter shooters, terrible chemistry and inexplicable offense.) Cousins, who missed Sunday night’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers, did not meet with media following Monday practice in Natomas. Teammates and coaches avoided offering any details on what Cousins may or may not have said to Spurs’ color commentator Sean Elliott following Friday’s loss at Sleep Train Arena. Geoff Petrie was also asked to address the Cousins situation, but the Kings president of basketball operations declined to meet with reporters. Cowbell Kingdom also reached out to the NBA for further clarity, but the league doesn’t release details of their investigations to such incidents, according to an official. “He told me his story, his side,” Kings head coach Keith Smart told the media pack present at Monday’s practice. “That’s between my center and the coach of the Sacramento Kings.” Cowbell Kingdom |

Fredette, however, has yet to jump in and ask to be freed via trade by Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie. "No, definitely not," Fredette said with a laugh. "I haven't talked to Geoff about anything like that." Sacramento Bee Petrie said Fredette is still in the Kings' plans. But the team has to figure out if Fredette is indeed a point guard or more of a combo guard, which would free him to score more and not run the offense as much. "Everybody eventually gets their opportunity," Petrie said. "He's got a real good feel for the game, and he hasn't come close to shooting the ball to his potential. That's not a concern given the quality of his stroke and his history of making shots. It'll just require some patience and time." Sacramento Bee Fredette is more concerned about how his performance can help the team than what's being tweeted. He's familiar with his fans' demand but doesn't pay much attention to it. "I can't control anything about that," Fredette said. "I'm here playing to the best of my ability and supporting my team, and other people can think whatever they want to think. That's not my job. My job is to be here, be supportive and play the best that I can." Sacramento Bee |

The Sacramento Kings will officially assign second-year forward Tyler Honeycutt to the Reno Bighorns of the NBA D-League tomorrow (November 8th, 2012), according to Kings’ President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. Honeycutt finished his rookie campaign (2011-12) averaging 1.3 points (.333 FGs, .333 3FGs, .600 FTs) in 15 games off the bench for Sacramento, but has yet to see any action this season. NBA.com |

![]() Petrie is in the last year of his contract, but it isn't weighing on him at the moment. "I think really for me the only contract I'm concerned about is the one all of us have, and that's the contract with life," Petrie said. "And you take that one day at a time." Sacramento Bee |

![]() Fredette insisted that he didn't play with any added motivation because of the team's decision to add another point guard to the mix, even if it does put him behind Brooks and Isaiah Thomas entering next season and qualify as the latest setback to an already frustrating start to his career. The obvious impact of the move could be spotted in the stands Monday during the Kings game, where Fredette's agent, Jeff Austin, was seen discussing the unexpected situation with Geoff Petrie, Sacramento's president of basketball operations, for nearly a half hour. #NBAKings reach agreement in principle with Aaron Brooks. Quote from Kings Pres Geoff Petrie via press release - “We’re really excited about the prospect of Aaron joining the team,” said Petrie. “The fact that he’s chosen to play for the Kings makes us feel good about what he’ll be able to provide to us on the court. Aaron’s another young player who brings a lot of speed, quickness, experience and scoring ability.” Sulia |

![]() Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie commenting on free agency and improving Kings: "A lot of the hot money goes out early. There still players out there who are quality players and there’s still the possibility for trades are certainly still pretty active. We’ve had quite a few conversations on different things and I’m hopeful we’ll get some things done in the next few days." Sulia |
