Pedro Luis Moreira: Greivis Vasquez on the death of Hugo Chavez: "It's a tough loss. We have to stick together as a country at this moment. Whether he did right or wrong, he was a human being. We need a calm transition. We can't start fighting. I spoke with Chavez several times. He was a guy with a presence. He's the best historian I've known. Unfortunately Chavez lost a battle." “How often do you get a chance to have the Super Bowl take place in the same city where you live?” said Hornets center/forward Jason Smith, explaining his decision to buy tickets. Smith is joined by Ryan Anderson, Anthony Davis, Eric Gordon, Robin Lopez, Roger Mason and Greivis Vasquez among Hornets players who bought Super Bowl XLVII tickets. Kick-off in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome – which is literally across Girod Street from the Hornets’ home arena – is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Central, giving players plenty of time to rest after a roughly three-hour flight from Minneapolis. Like several of his teammates, Smith said that his preference would have been to root for the Hornets’ NFL brothers, the New Orleans Saints. With no obvious reason to cheer for either participating team, Hornets players are split evenly between Baltimore and San Francisco. NBA.com

“It’s a great opportunity for me to develop my game, to develop my leadership skills, and I think this is a chance that I got to take advantage of because Coach Monty Williams really likes my game,” Vasquez said to HOOPSWORLD. “He likes what I do, and that’s important in the NBA when you get a coach that is really interested in helping you, he wants to help you, he wants to make you better, if you take advantage of that, you can really establish yourself in the NBA.” HoopsWorld

The NBA has adapted a new anti-flopping rule that will go into effect this season and New Orleans Hornets point guard Greivis Vasquez is pleased about the measure, where players could face fines up to $30,000 from the league if they repeatedly commit the violation. ``Sometimes a lot of players flop and they don’t get that call,’’ Vasquez said Wednesday after the NBA announced the new rule. ``Now you got to play straight and I’ll see less of it and that’s good for the game.’’ New Orleans Times-Picayune

``I think it’s (anti-flopping rule) good for the game because it’s getting out of hand,’’ Williams said. ``Some of the guys are good at it that it’s hard for the referees to make calls and I think the more you flop, the more you allow the refs to change games and they don’t want to do that. ``I’m not going to name names but there are some guys so good at it that it takes away from the game in my opinion.’’ In a statement, NBA Executive President of Basketball Operations Stu Jackson said flopping has no place in the game. ``They either fool referees into calling undeserved fouls or fool fans into thinking the referees missed a foul call," Jackson said. "Accordingly, both the Board of Governors and the Competition Committee felt strongly that any player who the league determines, following video review, to have committed a flop should – after a warning – be given an automatic penalty.” New Orleans Times-Picayune

White House highlights Greivis Vasquez as a "Champion of Change" in connecting the Americas. On Friday, July 27th, the White House, along with the U.S. State Department and U.S. AID, will honor leaders who have exemplified extraordinary successes and efforts toward the development of – and diplomacy with – their countries or communities of origin. “The nine Champions of Change we honor today highlight the power of proximity. These members of the Latin American Diaspora remind us that geography matters, that being a good neighbor is both good manners and a good investment. The Champions that we recognize today have helped their countries and communities of origin, and in doing so have bettered our region as a whole,” said Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta Jacobson. “These exceptional individuals, with their work in sports and community development, in education and financial inclusion, inspire others by their example. In a region with such profound human links between our societies, ideas and inspiration spread quickly to the benefit of people all over the Americas and the Caribbean.” NBA.com
