For Ike Diogu, it all happened so fast. The forward, out of the NBA since the 2008-09 season after a left knee injury that required microfracture surgery, had just finished one of his two daily workouts at a South Bay health club, gearing up for a move to play basketball in China beginning shortly after Christmas. Then his agent called. "He was like, you wouldn't believe this if I tell you this, but the Clippers have an interest in you. They want to bring you in for a workout," Diogu said, recalling the Dec. 21 phone call. "I was like, OK, what time? And he said 2 o'clock, and I looked at the clock, and it was 12:43. "That's pretty much how it happened -- just like that." Riverside Press-Enterprise

While he's pleased to be getting another chance in the NBA, Diogu also keeps an eye on his plans for a post-basketball career. A digital art major at Arizona State, he is interested in working in video games or computer animation. "Every summer, I go to the EA studios in Vancouver" -- Electronic Arts is a leading video-game maker -- "and just get some more behind- the-scenes info ... talk to designers and programmers and get to do some hands-on things. It's something I definitely have an interest." Riverside Press-Enterprise

Former Arizona State star Ike Diogu went an entire season out of the NBA after 2009 microfracture surgery and was working out on his own last week before he signed and played with the Clippers on Wednesday. With three Clippers big men out, Diogu went into the rotation for 32 minutes in two games, including a six-point, three-rebound effort Sunday vs. Phoenix. "The opportunity came out of nowhere," Diogu said. "It was getting to the point where I was probably going to have to go overseas and come back next season. I'm having a lot of fun, and I'm really thankful for this chance. "This was all I've been looking for since I was drafted, just an opportunity. The naysayers were the ones who said the negative stuff. I knew I belonged in the NBA." Arizona Republic

In preparation for the regular season opener against the New Jersey Nets next Wednesday, the Detroit Pistons have released forward Ike Diogu and guard Vernon Hamilton. The cuts get the Pistons' roster down to 15, the league maximum. Diogu joined the team on the opening day of training camp. The 6-foot-9 forward has averaged 6.1 points and 3.1 rebounds during his career. Booth Newspapers

Now word comes that the Mavs are eager to sign 10-year veteran Brian Cardinal with the first practice of training camp approaching in exactly one week. The Dallas brass has always admired big men that can step out and pop. And, Diogu waits. "Yeah, I believe my agent has spoken to Dallas. I'm not sure what direction they are going to go in, but like I said before, I'm definitely all for playing with the home team," Diogu said via text message. "It would be a dream come true and I reiterated that to my agent." ESPN.com

Dallas execs are spending Monday trying to fill out the roster for training camp, which begins in a week. I’ve been told they are leaning less toward “Brian Scalabrine types’’ and more toward "a player like'' Diogu, a 6-9, 250-pound power forward who, having just turned 27, still might have some upside. Sources say Dallas is considering local product Diogu (who starred at Garland High School) while still hoping to land an even better talent. dallasbasketball.com
