Machado made the Rockets opening night roster when the Rockets waived veteran guard Shaun Livingston on Monday. Rockets coach Kevin McHale had given Livingston extensive praise and playing time last week, but the Rockets opted to go with Machado and Toney Douglas as backup point guards. With the release of Livingston along with the players the Rockets had determined to let go on Sunday — Lazar Hayward, Gary Forbes, Jon Brockman and JaJuan Johnson – the Rockets moved $7.5 million under the luxury tax. All five had guaranteed deals, though just $1 million of the $3.5 million remaining on Livingston’s contract was guaranteed. After the roster moves, the Rockets will be an average of just 23.6-years-old on opening night, with just 1.93 seasons of NBA experience. Houston Chronicle

“It was a good opportunity the first year, and it was fun,” (JaJuan) Johnson said of playing for the Celtics. “But that’s what it is. It’s part of the business. That’s something that you learn early on. You can’t take it personally. You just have to move on. Right now, I will be playing in Houston. I’m happy about it, but we will see.” Journal and Courier

Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey announced today that the team has agreed to a sign-and-trade with guard/forward Courtney Lee, which will send him to the Boston Celtics as part of a three-team trade. The Rockets will receive from Boston a Charlotte Bobcats second-round draft pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, forward JaJuan Johnson, guard E’Twaun Moore and forward/center Sean Williams. The pick was previously acquired by Boston via Oklahoma City. Houston also acquires the rights to guard Jon Diebler from Portland. Boston completes the deal by agreeing to a sign-and-trade with guard/forward Sasha Pavlovic, which sends him to the Trail Blazers. NBA.com

The deal originally had Phoenix and New Orleans as facilitators, but that came apart late yesterday afternoon Pacific time. Late last night, Portland became the third team and Pavlovic was included. The amended details were still being learned as the Herald’s final print deadline passed, but the Celts will clearly be ecstatic to acquire the coveted 6-foot-5 Lee without disturbing their main rotation. Boston Herald

According to the sources, the Celtics will send JaJuan Johnson, E’Twaun Moore, Sean Williams, and a 2013 second-round pick to Houston for Lee, who will be entering his fifth NBA season. Johnson, Moore, and Williams will earn a combined $2.7 million next season, and the Celtics could also sign an additional player, such as Mickael Pietrus or Keyon Dooling, to include in the deal to be able to increase Lee’s salary.
