James Anderson has appeared in just 41 games since the Spurs made him the 20th pick of the 2010 NBA draft. So Anderson was disappointed, but not surprised, when Spurs general manager R.C. Buford informed him this week the team would not be picking up his third-year option for next season. “I kind of had a feeling,” Anderson said before shootaround Friday morning at the Target Center. “I hadn’t played enough games to prove myself yet. They made a decision. It happens.” San Antonio Express-News

By declining Anderson’s $1.56 million option, the Spurs haven’t necessarily severed ties with the 22-year-old guard, who was the 2010 Big 12 Player of the Year at Oklahoma State. Anderson will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, eligible to be signed by any team this summer. The Spurs would be limited to offering him only the price of the option. The Spurs also signed T.J. Ford to back up Parker and are hopeful that players such as forward James Anderson and center Tiago Splitter can have productive years. They are also excited about the potential of 20-year-old rookie forward Kawhi Leonard. ”We’ve always had a decent number of young guys (who played),” said Popovich, who couldn’t resist a joke. “It’s just that everybody concentrates on Tim, Tony and Manu and thinks of those three guys. When Robert (Horry) played for us I think he was 44 or 45. He used to do all the hamburger commercials. But we’ve always had a few young guys.” SheridanHoops

Rookie guard-forward James Anderson hobbled around the locker room on crutches before Saturday’s game with the Cavaliers, following doctors orders and putting no weight on his surgically repaired right foot. Doctors inserted a surgical pin in his foot’s fifth metatarsal, giving him a matching pair of surgically repaired fifth metatarsals. “I had the same operation on the left one when I was in high school,” Anderson said. “That wasn’t a stress fracture, though. I broke that one.” San Antonio Express-News
