A rugged rookie season might be over for Mavericks’ first-round draftee Jared Cunningham. The No. 24 overall pick said today he’s suffering from tendinitis in his right knee and is going to be out “for a while.” He said his sights already have been set toward the 2013-14 season. “My goal is to be completely ready for summer league,” Cunningham said after the Mavericks’ shootaround. “I want to get my body back to the way it was in college so I have my athleticism.” Dallas Morning News

Rookie guard Jared Cunningham has been re-assigned to the D-League's Texas Legends, the Mavericks announced. It will be the first-round pick's second stint in the D-League. It's unlikely that Cunningham would have seen significant minutes anyway, although the Mavs have a glaring need at backup point guard with Delonte West suspended and probably hours away from being removed from the roster. Cunningham will start camp as a backup at both shooting guard and point guard. Time will tell where he might get the bulk of his playing time. He’ll be competing with Beaubois, Delonte West and Vince Carter behind starters Mayo and Collison. Jared Cunningham has become a coveted player at the back end of the first round to early second. The former Oregon State guard shut down his workouts but was in Atlanta for an interview Tuesday.
