A rugged rookie season might be over for Mavericks’ first-round draftee Jared Cunningham. The No. 24 overall pick said today he’s suffering from tendinitis in his right knee and is going to be out “for a while.” He said his sights already have been set toward the 2013-14 season. “My goal is to be completely ready for summer league,” Cunningham said after the Mavericks’ shootaround. “I want to get my body back to the way it was in college so I have my athleticism.” Dallas Morning News

Rookie first-round pick Jared Cunningham sprained his thumb during Monday's practice and might not be available for the beginning of the season. It's unlikely that Cunningham would have seen significant minutes anyway, although the Mavs have a glaring need at backup point guard with Delonte West suspended and probably hours away from being removed from the roster. Cunningham will start camp as a backup at both shooting guard and point guard. Time will tell where he might get the bulk of his playing time. He’ll be competing with Beaubois, Delonte West and Vince Carter behind starters Mayo and Collison. For now, Cunningham is simply happy to be preparing for camp with no physical limitations. “This is the first injury I’ve ever had in my life that kept me out for any time,” he said. “So I didn’t want to take any chances and rush it back. “Now that my body is healthy, I can do some things that I know I can do. Once I get some of the offense down and the defensive schemes, we’ll have some fun.” Dallas Morning News

The Mavs join 22 other NBA teams and a D-League select squad in Las Vegas for a five-game schedule starting next Saturday (Mavs schedule below). The Dallas team will be headlined by guard Dominique Jones, who heads into his third season looking to make a serious push for a rotation spot. He didn't get the chance to compete in Vegas last summer because the lockout wiped out the league. The Mavs' three draft picks will also carry intrigue: combo guard Jared Cunningham (24th), center Bernard James (33rd) and small forward Jae Crowder (34th). ESPN.com

Vanderbilt marksman John Jenkins, Kentucky's Doron Lamb and Oregon State's Jared Cunningham are among the shooting guards receiving high marks from Griz personnel. Scouts also seem impressed by point guard prospects Marquis Teague of Kentucky and Tony Wroten of Washington. However, Griz brass entertained swingmen Draymond Green (Michigan State) and Jae Crowder (Marquette) on Saturday with great interest because of a desire to also add more versatile, high basketball IQ players to the roster.
