A professional athlete's career is always just one injury or one bad season away from ending forever. So, instead of blowing money on cars and houses, many are aiming to win big in franchising as they look to their financial futures following sports. Such is the case for Jared Jeffries of the New York Knicks who, along with his business partner Shawn Strader, recently joined the likes of other crafty ballers – including Jamal Mashburn, Shaquille O'Neal, Venus Williams and Drew Brees – looking to make a fortune in franchises. Jeffries and Strader have committed to opening a ZIPS Dry Cleaners, a Mid-Atlantic based chain that has built a brand name on its low-cost, one-price-for-any-garment model. Their franchise is expected to open in Northern Virginia by the end of the year. "Owning a franchise was the next logical step for me and Shawn, and ZIPS provided a safe and promising way to ease into the industry," said Jeffries, who has been business partners with Strader since the two started their own company specializing in residential real estate investment in 2007. The company, JV Management, currently owns properties throughout Florida, New York and Washington, DC, as well as freestanding land in Ohio. Reuters

The Knicks have free agents that the Suns could want in a deal but they probably could sign them outright without needing a sign-and-trade, such as Jared Jeffries and Steve Novak. That’s why it is possible the Knicks would have to include one of their signed players. The Suns would probably want Iman Shumpert. Ater a solid rookie season, he is rehabbing from a torn ACL and isn’t back until January at the earliest. The Knicks could also look into a sign-and-trade for Raymond Felton with Portland. Jared Jeffries gave a gruesome description of the Amar’e Stoudemire fire-extinguisher episode after Game 2 of the playoffs in Miami. Jeffries and Josh Harrellson were right in front of Stoudemire when it occurred. “By Josh’s expression, I turned around and looked and Amar’e’s hand was wide open with blood falling out of it,’’ Jeffries said. “I’ve been hunting all over the world, I’ve gone fishing all over the world, so blood doesn’t bother me that much. But just the amount of blood coming out on a human, especially on one of my teammates, seeing it almost made me feel sick because I knew it was very serious. “We were in disbelief because anyone that saw it, we knew it was serious. It wasn’t one of those injuries where you cut it, a couple of stitches, or they put a towel on it and it’s OK.” New York Post

The recent inconsistency with All-Star point guard Derrick Rose in and out of the lineup due to injuries makes New York Knicks backup Jared Jeffries believe that the Chicago Bulls are the better potential first-round matchup in the playoffs. "I still think the Bulls," Jeffries said Friday afternoon on ESPN 1050's Ryan Ruocco and Robin Lundberg show. "Whenever you can have an MVP candidate or former MVP player be out on the team, I think that's what you've got to go for. I mean, they're still playing very well without him, but I'm not sure over a seven-game series they can keep that high level of playing without Derrick Rose." ESPN.com

Despite blowing some lay-ups Jeffries, who shot 3-of-9, had a rock-solid night in filling in as the starting power forward for an absent Amar’e Stoudemire. “Indulge me for a second, anybody who boos Jared Jeffries has got to reexamine their life a little bit,” D’Antoni said following the Knicks’ 99-88 winover the Jazz at the Garden. “I love our fans and I like Madison Square Garden, the arena, but here’s a guy who came back to us, minimum contract. He could’ve gone to a lot of other teams. He plays as hard as anybody could possibly ever play, with injuries, everything you ask him. He takes every charge, every dirty play, every rebound. He works every second.” New York Post
