The New Orleans Pelicans say centre Jason Smith is out indefinitely with a right knee injury. The club says an MRI has revealed cartilage damage in the knee. The 7-foot Smith has played in 31 games and has started 27 times. He's averaging 9.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1 block in 26.8 minutes per game. The injury is only the latest setback for the Pelicans, who'd lost seven straight entering Saturday night's home game against Golden State. Courier-Islander

New Orleans Pelicans forward/center Jason Smith says he doesn't feel pain in his surgically repaired right shoulder that he experienced last season and forced him to miss the final 24 games. But he still hasn't been cleared to participate in contact work yet during volunteer workouts. Smith is hoping to be cleared just before the Pelicans open training camp on Oct. 1. ``That's best guess right now because you never know if things will flare up when you hit somebody,'' Smith said earlier this week after participating in the team's volunteer workouts at the Pelicans new practice facility. ``You put in the time to rest and recover and you put in the work to strengthened it and get back in shape. That's all I can do right now is try to get in the best shape that I can.'' New Orleans Times-Picayune

The 27-year-old is encouraged by the progress he’s made, saying that his primary goal is to be available to 100 percent on Day 1 of training camp. “I hope so,” Smith said. “That’s the best guess right now, because you never know if things will flare up when you hit somebody. You just have to trust your body. That’s all I can do right now, get into the best shape I can and come into training camp with a positive mindset and winning attitude. “It feels really good. I don’t have the pain I had playing with it (last season). It’s all fixed and better. Knowing that it is better, I have to go out and trust it. I’ve never had an injury like this. I really have to put my faith in the training staff and in communicating with them, to tell them how I feel. I’ve got to trust the shoulder, knowing that I’ve put in the work, and I should be good to go for training camp.” NBA.com
