One month ago, Sports Illustrated published a long feature on Anderson and the suicide of his girlfriend, Gia Allemand, who starred in “The Bachelor” and “Bachelor Pad.” She killed herself after a fight with Anderson one month before training camp opened last season. Smith was a central part of the story, rushing to Anderson’s house that night to console him and being part of his recovery from the tragedy. Smith was depicted as his best friend on the Pelicans. Anderson, a power forward, has become an advocate for suicide awareness. “I still have not read [the article],’’ Smith said before the Knicks’ 104-93 loss to the Pelicans Tuesday night. “It’s still very fresh in my mind. I told him that [Monday] night. He was surprised. Some day down the line I’ll read it. But I’m glad they did very good job of writing it from what I heard. Ryan was very happy about it. I think it helped him in the process of getting closure.’’ New York Post

“Jason Smith originally was out for personal reasons, so once Jason was back, Cole had played some, it was important that we got Jason some minutes so we could see how he might be able to help us,” Fisher said. “[Cole’s absence] was just a byproduct of that, nothing else. Cole’s been solid and has done everything we’re asking him to do, so it wasn’t a demotion or any reason related to his performance, just continuing to try and find the best way to put our team together.” ESPN.com

The New Orleans Pelicans say centre Jason Smith is out indefinitely with a right knee injury. The club says an MRI has revealed cartilage damage in the knee. The 7-foot Smith has played in 31 games and has started 27 times. He's averaging 9.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1 block in 26.8 minutes per game. The injury is only the latest setback for the Pelicans, who'd lost seven straight entering Saturday night's home game against Golden State. Courier-Islander
