Terry said the Celtics’ goal of winning a championship has not changed, despite the absence of Rondo because of a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. Terry’s play has been uneven this season but he said the team’s current group of guards can compensate for Rondo’s absence. “The role doesn’t change,” Terry said. “No question, the goal is to win a championship. It doesn’t matter. I’ve been a point guard on a young team that went to the Finals in [2005-06]. I still think we’ve got just as good of a chance as anybody and when we’re playing the right way, moving the ball, and playing defensively like we’re capable of, we’re tough to beat.” Boston Globe

Forty-one years of NBA history was over. The source of some of the league’s biggest names and most entertaining teams — and the only Seattle franchise to claim a championship in major professional sports — was gone. “Destroyed,” was the word chosen by Boston’s Jason Terry, who grew up in Seattle and starred at Frankin High, which is about 5 miles from the Sonics’ old haunt, Key Arena. “There [were] all kind of ‘Save the Sonics’ shirts, signs and blogs.” NBA.com

Regarding the subject of jersey number retirement, Cuban said Derek Harper would probably be up next. Harper, along with Mark Aguirre, were the two Mavericks along with Brad Davis and Rolando Blackman (whose numbers already hang in the rafters) who got the franchise started in the early days. “I’ll deal with Derek first,” Cuban said when asked if Terry’s jersey would go up soon. “I’d say there’s a good chance [Harper’s number will be retired]. But I’m in no rush to do that.” Dallas Morning News

Here are some more comments from Carlisle: On his overall feelings for Terry: “He’s just a special guy and one of the greatest players to ever wear a Mavericks uniform. He obviously will be Mavs’ royalty for life, without question. I hope some day that he comes back and he can work with our franchise. I hope I’m around when he’s done playing so he and I can work together. That would be great.” How important was it for Terry to buy in to the sixth-man role early in Carlisle’s Dallas tenure: “It wasn’t really a buy-in thing. He loved the challenge of it and he understood the necessity. For us to be the team that we could be it was necessary for him to do that and he went at it full-bore” Boston Herald

Terry has moved on in Boston, averaging 11.4 points as a Celtics starter, but he’ll always be considered a Maverick by many. And he’ll certainly always be a champion, having played a huge role in the Mavs’ 2011 title run. “He was special obviously,” said Mark Cuban, who laughed when he recalled refusing to approve a trade that would have sent Terry to Utah for Raul Lopez during his first year in Dallas. “He got off to a rough start, but he just worked all the time and we wouldn’t have had our ring without him. He caught a lot of grief, and he just kept on working harder and harder and harder. “People blamed him when we didn’t win in the playoffs, but when it came time to shine, he shined. So you can’t say enough great things about Jet.” ESPN.com

Of course, Terry wants more than just a job. He expects his No. 31 to hang in the American Airlines Center rafters after he retires, even pointing to a suggested spot while celebrating with a victory cigar dangling from his mouth on the day of the championship parade through downtown Dallas. "We'll deal with that," Cuban said, grinning. "I'm not opposed to it, let's put it that way." ESPN.com

As Kris Humphries was leaving Boston Garden and declining to discuss his fracas with Rajon Rondo, Jason Terry was in the Celtics locker room insulting the Nets forward. "Some guys are tough. Some guys pretend to be. He's one of those that pretends to be," Terry told reporters. "I played with him (on the 2009-10 Dallas Mavericks). Maybe that's the role Avery (Johnson) wants him to have, but he could leave that to somebody else." Terry continued jab at Humphries, calling him “soft.” New York Daily News

In any case, Terry has set the tone for the Celtic reserves since arriving as a free agent, and on Thursday, he reiterated the second unit’s goal. “Adding Barbosa made a deep bench even deeper,” Terry said after practice. “Not only are we deep but we’re very explosive and we are going to look to outscore everyone’s bench this season, every time we step out on the floor. “We have the deepest bench in basketball. The Clippers might have something to say about that, but it’s us in this locker room. Our mission every night is to go out and outwork and outscore every other bench.” Boston Globe
