Now that new coach George Karl is in place in Sacramento, sources told Sporting News this week that the Kings have stepped up their focus on re-arranging the roster in order to bring in the type of athletic, versatile players that suit Karl’s aggressive and up-tempo style of play. Even before the hiring of Karl, the team has been shopping big man Jason Thompson, reserve forward Derrick Williams and—in lieu of a first-round pick—rookie Nik Stauskas. Sporting News

The Nets have been in discussions about trading either Lopez or Deron Williams this season, including talks with the Kings that would have centered around Williams going to Sacramento in exchange for Darren Collison, Jason Thompson and Derrick Williams. Those talks were held up, however, by the Kings being interested in Mason Plumlee and the Nets in rookie Nik Stauskas, both non-starters for the other team. New York Post

Forward Jason Thompson has long been available in trade talks, but a deal involving Thompson likely would happen separately. The Kings are trying to move him, but Thompson's contract will be more valuable this summer or at next season's trade deadline heading into 2016-17, when only $2.7 million of his $6.8 million will be guaranteed. A hiccup in the trade is Sacramento coveting Mason Plumlee, who is not part of the deal as currently proposed. Plumlee would upgrade the Kings at the power forward spot forming an imposing frontcourt along with DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay. All three were teammates on Team USA that captured the FIBA World Cup in Spain this offseason. CSNBayArea.com

They’ll also be active on the trade market, and I’d love to see them either move Jason Thompson or use him as a backup center. In Gay, Derrick Williams, and even Omri Casspi, the Kings have the tools to play small-ball lineups, but that will be a tiny feature of their rotation as long as Malone starts the Cousins-Thompson duo. The rising cap has renewed interest in Thompson as a bench big, according to several sources across the league. Grantland

“American Sniper,” a new film directed by Clint Eastwood, will star Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper and…Jason Thompson? The seventh-year Kings power forward/center has been recalibrating a mortar shot of his own this offseason. “You will see me shooting 3s. I’ll be shooting the 3 with a different type of arsenal,” Thompson told Cowbell Kingdom. Cowbell Kingdom

“Trade talk happens before the draft,” Thompson said at his camp Tuesday morning. “But I’m a man, I’m true to my word and regardless of what happens I still want to keep it out here. I still have a lot of support.” Thompson, 27, is the longest-tenured King as he prepares to enter his seventh season, which also means he’s been mired in Sacramento’s losing ways more than his teammates. His contract has three years and more than $19 million left, and Thompson understands he will be involved in trade talk. Sacramento Bee

Thompson said he doesn’t ask general manager Pete D’Alessandro about potential trades and where he fits in the Kings’ plans. “You just control what you can control,” Thompson said. “All I can do is worry about what I can do ... my job and Pete and everyone else do theirs.” Sacramento Bee
