HoopsHype Jeff Teague + Trade rumors

July 10, 2014 Updates

Eric Pincus: Jeff Teague technically can block any Atlanta trades (ones that aren't happening mind you) until 7/13/14. Teague signed an offer sheet last year with the Bucks - Hawks matched - giving him 1 year no-trade clause - about to expire @BBallInsiders Twitter @EricPincus

However, the Hawks are also not completely sold on Jeff Teague and could explore the market for him this summer. That's led them to take long looks at both Shabazz Napier and Payton at No. 15 if something materializes in the next few days. Napier, especially, seems to have gained momentum in workouts the past few weeks, and sources say he's moved into a strong possibility in Atlanta. ESPN.com

The Knicks have had talks with Atlanta regarding Jeff Teague, who is available, sources say. The Hawks have been trying to improve their small forward position, but the Knicks can’t help them there. The downside to Teague is that he’s got three years left on a $32 million deal and that would cut into the Knicks’ future cap space. New York Daily News

Atlanta Hawks point guard Jeff Teague has emerged as an appealing trade target for the New York Knicks, sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com. Sources told ESPN.com that the Knicks, leading into Thursday's 3 p.m. ET trade deadline, are calling all over the league in an attempt to upgrade at point guard. ESPN.com

Teague's name has surfaced as a prime target given the Knicks' increasing fears that their longstanding top choice -- Toronto's Kyle Lowry -- will not be made available before the deadline, according to sources. The Knicks have been chasing Lowry all season, as ESPN.com first reported in November. But sources indicate that Lowry and his advisers expect to finish the season in Toronto with the playoff-bound Raptors before he becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1. ESPN.com

One scenario to keep an eye on here, though, is the possibilty of a three-team deal also involving the Hawks and point guard Jeff Teague. Atlanta has all of its first-round picks in the next four drafts and could conceivably send one to Toronto to satisfy the Raptors' demand for a future draft pick. League sources say a scenario in which Teague ends up in Toronto, Shumpert goes to Atlanta and Lowry winds up in New York has been discussed. Another scenario could have Teague ending up in New York. The conversations are believed to be preliminary and have not reached an advanced stage. ESPN.com

Danny Ferry, true to Spurs form, is radio silent, and Lou Williams’s decline has robbed him of a once intriguing piece. This is a solid roster filled with talented players on movable contracts, but that can cut both ways. The Hawks might be happy landing the no. 3 spot in a turd conference, staying lean, and keeping the war chest intact for whatever comes down the line. But they could also act if a talent they like becomes available, and sources around the NBA continue to insist Ferry is not in love with Jeff Teague’s four-year, $32 million deal. The Kings have 14 players under contract and one of those players (Hassan Whiteside) does not have a guaranteed contract. So there is still the possibility for more moves. Jeff Teague is held in high regard, but do the Kings have the assets to convince Atlanta to part with Teague, even though they acquired Devin Harris? Not sure the Kings could dump one or two of their wing players in exchange for Teague. Sulia

Ferry still has a key piece or to offer Orlando in trade proposals for Howard in All-Star center Al Horford and young guard Jeff Teague, as well as the forthcoming salary-cap space to pursue Howard in the summer of 2013 should Orlando resist the trade inquiries sources say he'll soon be making and Howard indeed makes it to free agency as scheduled.
