Jeff Withey became something of a menace in the paint for opponents in four years at the University of Kansas. The 6-foot-11 center, who was one of four prospects to work out for the Clippers Monday, blocked 3.8 shots per game his senior season and showed plenty of instinct as a help defender in his four years in Lawrence. But the workout process prior to the June 27 Draft has the lanky big man trying to show NBA personnel he can do more. “I want people to see that I have a little bit of an offensive game,” Withey said. “I’ve been working a lot on my 15-foot jump shot and I feel pretty confident right now. I didn’t shoot the best today, in this workout, but overall I’m feeling pretty happy with it.” NBA.com

Several mock drafts at one point predicted the Nets would take Withey 22nd overall, although now DraftExpress has him going 29th and NBAdraft.net has him slipping to Sacramento in the second round at No. 36 overall. “Jeff Withey (impressed with) his size, his length, the ability to make an impact at the rim,’’ said director of player personnel Gregg Polinsky, who oversaw a workout with a total of six players today at the Nets’ training facility. “I thought he was good, (I was) not disappointed at all. He stepped out; we had him shoot some 3s at the end, because we think that’s one of the things he can do, be a pick-and-pop 5. Those are hard to find. Obviously he gives you a presence at the rim defensively, a good solid defensive rebounder in college and he comes from a place in Kansas where it’s not done any better.’’ New York Post

Former Kansas big man Jeff Withey will work out for both New York teams this week and could be an attractive option in the first round. The 7-foot, 235-pound center visits the Knicks Monday and the Nets Tuesday. The Nets pick No. 22 and the Knicks choose No. 24 in the June 27 NBA Draft. ZagsBlog.com
