Trade talks involving Charlotte and Brooklyn restarted later last month that also involved Joe Johnson but nothing happened. "It's all speculation, though," Plumlee said to reporters on Thursday at the All-Star practice. "I could go through a lot of guys in the league you would love to play with but he gets brought up because he's a Brooklyn guy. I'm sure the city would love to have him. But he's not helping us right now." "I respect him as a player," added Plumlee. New York Daily News

In fact, a pair of recent reports have cast doubt on whether Hollins and Johnson will still be with the team when the snow subsides. The Nets’ brass is prepared to “evaluate” Hollins, according to a report from ESPN. Johnson, meanwhile, was being discussed in trade talks with the Charlotte Hornets, who were offering a package including Brooklyn native Lance Stephenson, swingman Gerald Henderson and forward Marvin Williams, according to a report from Yahoo Sports. But according to a source with knowledge of the Nets’ thinking, the report about Hollins was untrue and the trade talks with the Hornets had ended. Still, the two teams could reignite negotiations closer to the Feb. 19 trade deadline. In fact, the Hornets have discussed sending Stephenson to Brooklyn no fewer than three times since signing him to a three-year, $27 million deal last summer, according to the source. Alex Kennedy: Rival executive told me that restrictions put on tax teams and ugly contracts of Williams/Johnson are making it difficult for Nets to trade. The Nets could obviously dump those guys. But getting significant pieces back who would turn around their season is proving to be difficult. Twitter @AlexKennedyNBA

The Charlotte Hornets and Brooklyn Nets have restarted trade discussions, this time focused on guard Joe Johnson, league sources told Yahoo Sports. The Hornets and Nets are discussing a larger package that would likely include guards Lance Stephenson and Gerald Henderson and forward Marvin Williams, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Yahoo! Charlotte owner Michael Jordan has been intrigued with the possibility of Johnson, who has struggled recently with tendinitis. Johnson, 33, has one of the three major contracts that the Nets would ideally like to unload, what with the $23.1 million on his 2014-'15 deal, and $24.9 million in the final season of his 2015-'16 contract. “It was very shocking,” Joe Johnson said, “because I’ve honestly never heard of athletes, especially when you are working out and training hard every day, catching blood clots. “It’s random and just to hear that and then hear some of the things that he said over the course of the past week of so about how he can’t breathe. … It’s kind of scary.” New York Post

Nets officials are confident they can move Williams and Lopez, retool around Johnson and stay in the playoff hunt in a weak Eastern Conference. Come 2016, Johnson would be off the books, too, leaving the Nets with a bundle of cap room to pursue Kevin Durant, Joakim Noah, DeMar DeRozan, Andre Drummond or Al Horford among others in a stacked free-agent class. The Nets also are active in the trade market, but rival executives doubt they'll find a taker for Deron Williams, who has two years and $43 million left on his contract, or to a lesser extent, Joe Johnson, who has one year and $24.9 million left. "Those contracts are hard to swallow," one exec said. CBSSports.com

Charlotte has been open to discussing the Nets' big-salary stars as part of a broader Stephenson package, including Lopez and Joe Johnson, sources said. The combination of a third year on Deron Williams' deal – as well as the emergence of Walker as the franchise's point guard – leaves Charlotte uninterested in acquiring Williams, league sources said. Thursday was the first opportunity for Johnson to address the rumors the Nets are exploring their options in possible trades for him, Deron Williams and Brook Lopez. Not surprisingly, the mild-mannered and laid-back Johnson said he could handle the speculation without too much trouble. “This is what comes with the territory,” said Johnson, who has been dealt three times in his career — including to the Nets in July 2012. “It’s part of it. And us as players, we still have jobs to do. And that’s to come out, try to get victories and help this team be successful. We just got to stay focused with that.” New York Post

Though Nets coach Lionel Hollins said he wasn’t sure whether Johnson would be able to play against Philadelphia Friday in Brooklyn, Johnson left no doubt about what will happen when the Nets take the floor. “I’m definitely going to play,” Johnson said. “I got here [today] a little early, so I can try and get a little workout in before the guys got in because I knew they probably wouldn’t do it as much on the court. I felt pretty good. Still a little low on energy, but for the most part, I’ll be all right.” New York Post
