Jon Diebler said this morning he has signed a one-year contract to play for Panionios in the Greek A1 League this season. The contract does not have an opt-out clause if the NBA lockout ends and the league goes back to work, he said. Diebler was a second-round selection by the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA draft in June. "I'm there for the year," Diebler said. "With the lockout, it put a twist on things. I'm definitely a guy who would benefit from a full (training) camp instead of a shortened one." Buckeye Xtra Sports Diebler's agent, Lance Young, said Diebler's contract is for more than $100,000 and includes "up-front money." "Doing stuff to protect him was our main objective," Young said, "making sure when he gets there, he gets a little chunk of change once he passes his physical." While not revealing Diebler's salary, Young said it is worth "well over the $100,000 mark. Buckeye Xtra Sports |

Jon Diebler was offered in the last hours to Cimberio Varese, who landed recently Luca Garri and will announce soon Drake Diener and the permanence of Kristjan Kangur. Diebler was selected by Portland Trail Blazers in the 2011 NBA Draft with the 51ist overall. The player spent his college career with Ohio State becoming one of the best shooter in the NCAA averaging 12.6ppg, 2.6rpg and 2.4apg in his senior year shooting with 50% from behind the arc. Jon Diebler is a specialist, and that might be good enough. At least, it might be when it comes to realizing his NBA dreams. “With my ability to shoot the basketball, I could help,” Diebler said after a workout with the Indiana Pacers. “There’s always room for a shooter on a team.” Diebler is a 6-foot-6 guard with a sweet perimeter stroke, excellent form and an underrated ability to free himself for shots. He was never considered much of an NBA prospect until his senior season at Ohio State — when he shot just better than 50 percent on 3-pointers. FOXSportsOhio |

Diebler is a great shooter, and that ability will get him in the loop. "You look at Jason Kapono play," an Eastern Conference executive said of the Sixers guard. "I don't know why Diebler can't play. And Diebler's probably a little tougher and will mix it up a little more." Said a Southwest personnel director: "He's not the greatest athlete in the world, but he's a better player than most are giving him credit for. I think he'll get a lot of opportunities to get invited to training camps. Shooting's a funny thing. Nobody really wants to draft it or sign it or trade for it, but halfway through the year the coach is always saying 'we don't have enough shooting.'" NBA.com |
