Pro basketball is a business and players get traded with regularity. In fact, Bucks general manager John Hammond made a June trade for the fifth consecutive year on Wednesday. But he admitted it was tough to tell second-year forward and former Wisconsin star Jon Leuer that he was part of the deal that brought center Samuel Dalembert to the Bucks. "We had no intention of moving Jon," Hammond said. "The only reason we did it was because it was the only way to make the salary structure work to complete the deal." Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

The Bucks needed the salaries of Leuer, Jon Brockman and Shaun Livingston to be within a certain range of the $6.7 million owed to Dalembert in the final year of his contract. The Bucks took him with the 40th overall pick in the draft, making him part of the vanishing breed of four-year college players in the NBA. As he scans the locker room at the Bradley Center, the only other four-year college veteran in the room is Jon Brockman, who played at Washington. "I hadn't even thought of that," said Leuer, who credits his extended stay in college with preparing him for making the jump to the pros. "Playing for Coach (Bo) Ryan there was a lot of learning and growing up while I was there. Leuer, whom the Bucks drafted in the second round of the 2011 NBA draft, can't sign with the Bucks - and consequently practice with the team - until he receives clearance from FIBA. Leuer, a power forward, has been playing for the Skyliners Frankfurt in Germany. There has been some doubt about whether he would report to Bucks training camp, which opens Friday. But Bartelstein said his client has an opt-out clause in his contract with Skyliners Frankfurt and intended on exercising it. "I think he'll be back here early next week,'' Bartelstein said. Leuer said two of his professors agreed to give him grades of incomplete in two spring classes so he could travel for NBA pre-draft workouts. He then retook those classes in the summer and earned a history degree. “It’s mostly up to the player and how much he values getting a degree,” said Leuer, drafted by Milwaukee Bucks with the 40th overall pick. “A lot of guys say, ‘I’m done with school and I’m just going to focus on basketball.’  ” That’s even more tempting for a one-and-done player, who isn’t as close to graduating. “Once you start working out (for NBA teams), you start thinking, ‘Why am I going to study hall? If one word has filtered through the approach to this year's draft for the Nets, it's "athlete." When you have a point guard like Deron Williams running the show, you want to surround him with as many athletes as possible. So the Nets, who pick 27th and 36th, brought in six athletic types yesterday -- two guards and four power forwards -- for the first group of draft workouts. And among the pack were two players, UCLA combo guard Malcolm Lee and Wisconsin shooting power forward Jon Leuer, who have shown up either directly on in close proximity to the Nets in several of the mock drafts. Plus, it doesn't hurt that those two have experience -- Leuer is a four-year guy while Lee played for three. "Lee is quick.
