Don’t hold your breath on the Raptors using the amnesty clause this season. Certainly where Jose Calderon is concerned, you can pretty much forget about it. Calderon, who has a year left and 10.561-million on his contract has been speculated in the past as a potential amnesty target. The amnesty clause was included in the NBA collective bargaining agreement signed in December and allows teams a one-time only opportunity to get out from under their worst contracts. Toronto Sun

Apparently Baron Davis and Jose Calderon nearly got into an altercation after the game. Remember, the Air Canada Centre has a strange dynamic where both teams exit through the same tunnel. Apparently Davis and Calderon collided toward the end of the game and Davis apparently felt that Calderon tried to grab him around the head, so he was waiting for the Raptors point guard in the tunnel after the game. However, Tyson Chandler held Davis back, preventing him from getting into any trouble with the league... Give the big man an assist. Newark Star-Ledger

Now, there can be no question, in his time in Toronto at least, that TJ had some issues. He didn’t handle the competition with Jose Calderon all that well – although I will tell you without question that the two remain friends today – and TJ had a tendency to sulk when things didn’t go his way. But he was a relative kid and in the grand scheme of things, I guess hindsight should give him a pass. He was TJ, and the stubbornness wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Toronto Star

The news on Jose Calderon was better than expected. The sprained right ankle he suffered Saturday night in Detroit may not be the long-term or even a moderately long one based on how the ankle responded to treatment Sunday. “He’s much improved over last night,” head coach Dwane Casey said of Calderon, adding the team will take him on the five-game road swing that begins in Cleveland on Tuesday. The question is how surprised Gasol is that Calderon, one of the most efficient point guards in the league — his 4.74 assists per turnover laps the rest of the league this season — is continually being run out of town by fans who want him traded or in the case of last season, actually traded and then brought back when the deal fell through. “It does surprise me,” Gasol said. “All he cares about his making his teammates better and winning. In the league those guys are hard to find. Guys that just play the right way and get everyone involved and move the ball. They don’t care about anything else but winning.” Toronto Sun

There are a few other PGs who could be available. While the Lakers would love to get Houston's Kyle Lowry, the Rockets plan to build around their vastly-improved point guard. But either of their two backups, Goran Dragic or Jonny Flynn, would be an improvement over what they currently have. Lots of teams are calling Toronto about Jose Calderon and Andrea Bargnani. The Raptors aren't likely to part with Bargnani, and if they move Calderon, they'll need to get a point guard in return. That would seem to make a trade for Calderon unlikely. ESPN.com

Marc Gasol is an all-star this season, Pau Gasol is not. But the consensus, really, is that either would have been a fine choice. “I think both of them should be there,” said Raptors point guard Jose Calderon, who has played for years with both on the highly successful Spanish national team. “I think (Pau is) one of the best at his position but you know it happens. There’s so many guys ... (LaMarcus) Aldridge, (Kevin) Love, (Dirk) Nowitzki. Even some guys I’m missing, but he’s an all-star.” Toronto Sun

So how did Kyrie Irving look to the fans at Quicken Loans Arena? How about like a 19-year-old point guard in his first NBA game. A sentence like that means is was a long night for the No. 1 pick in the Cavaliers' 104-96 loss to Toronto. While some fans will focus on Irving's miserable 2-of-12 shooting night, the other eye-opener and heart-stopper for the kid from Duke was Jose Calderon. Young Mr. Irving probably knew very little about Calderon until this night. The former star in the Spanish pro league who has spent the last six seasons in the NBA torched Irving not only for 14 points, but 11 assists. Irving was destroyed on the pick-and-roll, and the Cavs' lack of team speed -- especially when Antawn Jamison and Omri Casspi were together at forward -- meant many of Calderon's passes led to dunks and layups.
