The Mavericks on Saturday announced they've signed guard Josh Akognon to a rest-of-the-season contract after Akognon's original 10-day deal expired Friday. ESPNDallas.com has learned that Akognon's deal includes a team option for the 2013-14 season that will, at the very least, ensure he's a Maverick through the summer. Akognon made his NBA debut in Wednesday's home loss to Phoenix and made his only shot in totaling two points and an assist in four minutes. ESPN.com

Sources told ESPN.com that the Mavs on Thursday will sign Josh Akognon to a 10-day deal. The high-scoring sharpshooter from Cal State Fullerton went to training camp with the Mavs but ended up returning to China to play for Liaoning when he was Dallas' final cut before opening-night rosters were finalized. Akognon is meeting the team in Colorado, sources said, in advance of the Mavs' game Thursday against the Denver Nuggets. The 5-foot-11 combo guard averaged nearly 30 points per game in China this season and will take the roster spot of Justin Dentmon, who was informed after Tuesday night's loss to the Lakers he wouldn't be receiving a second 10-day deal. Scoring point guard Josh Akognon, who has Nigerian roots, confirmed he will open the training camp with the Dallas Mavericks starting within the next few days. Sharp shooter Akognon led the Kings with the 19.3 points per game during the summer. The player has admitted that Mavs’ owner Mark Cuban was the main reason behind his decision. “He talked about how they had just lost Jason Terry, and they had lost J.J. Barea the year before. Those guys were not true point guards, either, but they were able to learn the position. For him to have that much enthusiasm in my game — no other owner was calling my agent” said Akognon last week.
