Though he’d shown the ability to make 3-pointers and his hustle was off the charts, Josh Akognon has been waived by the Mavericks, bringing their roster down to the maximum 15 players. Akognon, out of Cal State-Fullerton, had played in China last season. Dallas Morning News
Scoring point guard Josh Akognon, who has Nigerian roots, confirmed he will open the training camp with the Dallas Mavericks starting within the next few days. Sharp shooter Akognon led the Kings with the 19.3 points per game during the summer. The player has admitted that Mavs’ owner Mark Cuban was the main reason behind his decision. “He talked about how they had just lost Jason Terry, and they had lost J.J. Barea the year before. Those guys were not true point guards, either, but they were able to learn the position. For him to have that much enthusiasm in my game — no other owner was calling my agent” said Akognon last week. Josh Akognon signed a fully guaranteed contract with Liaoning in China for the 12-13 season. But the contract contains an out-clause to go to an NBA team, which has been exercised for Akognon to join the Dallas Mavericks on a non-guaranteed contract, a source told RealGM. Akognon will return to Lianoning if the Mavericks decide not to keep him on their regular season roster. RealGM
