Childress, 29, worked hard and was an ideal teammate, but he did not put a dent of impact on the standings for Phoenix. He was part of misplayed reactions to losing Amar'e Stoudemire. He was unnecessary at an overloaded position and a difficult fit as a poor-shooting wing with overrated defense. Childress can take a minimum deal to prove his worth again. Chicago and Washington showed interest in him and Redd. Arizona Republic

The Suns also have a choice of whether to continue with the 38-year-old point guard who seeks a three-year contract and could get $10 million annually elsewhere. A contract commitment to Nash limits what else the Suns could do in free agency, although they could free up more space if they use an amnesty clause on Josh Childress (owed $21 million over the next three years regardless but an amnesty claim takes him off the Suns' books for cap purposes). Childress will turn 29 next month but still believes there is a role for him with Phoenix. "Coach (Alvin Gentry) said as much," Childress said. "Once again, I'm not a GM and I'm not a coach. I can't really discuss what that role is. A lot of it will depend on what direction the team goes. I love it here. Obviously, the on-the-court stuff hasn't been the best for me. The organization has been wonderful. The city, the fans. If the on-court stuff can be taken care of, it'd be ideal." Arizona Republic

With $21 million over three years remaining on his deal, Childress will remain a candidate after averaging 2.9 points and 2.8 rebounds in 34 appearances this season. "No question," Childress said of the amnesty possibility. "I'm not worried about it. I really have to focus on Josh and not worry about things that are out of my control." Arizona Republic
