Veteran NBA forward Josh Powell, waived by the Rockets last week, has remained with the team to try his hand at coaching while he considers his next move. If he chooses to retire as a player, he could then officially join the Rockets’ staff as a player development coach working with Rockets big men. “It just fell into place,” Powell said. “I don’t ever question what God has in store. One door closes and another one opens. Coach (Kevin McHale) is being patient with me. Everyone has been real helpful in helping me through the transition process. I look forward to a new chapter and an exciting opportunity.” Houston Chronicle

Declining to participate with USA Basketball, Howard spent much of his time in his hometown of Atlanta working out with Rockets teammate Josh Powell. His plan was to build off what quietly was a stellar postseason performance in which he was a dominant presence on both ends during a first-round loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. “He was able to give everybody a glimpse,” Powell said of Howard, who averaged 26 points, 13.7 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in that six-game series. “It was real good to see how hard he was working and how dedicated he was. I just know that he looks forward to getting back to his old self and doing a lot more.” Washington Post

Some of the narrative around the Rockets has turned to their youth. Age-wise, they are the youngest team in the playoffs. Asked if youth is an obstacle, Howard — who with nine years in the league is the team’s elder statesman — mentioned teammates Josh Powell and Francisco Garcia as players who understand not to take things for granted. It’s a lesson he implied his younger teammates need to grasp. “They don’t understand it,” Howard said. “At the same time, that’s why it takes guys like Francisco, Josh Powell, myself to know that nothing is promised. Guys who’ve been in the league for 15, 16 years didn’t get a ring. … Nothing’s promised, you know. We can’t take any moment, any series, any team, any minute on the court for granted. You gotta go at it. You gotta stay focused. You gotta stay positive.” Oregonian
