"It's nothing against LeBron or Carmelo, but to me, I think Dwight's a pretty loyal guy," said Hawks forward Josh Powell, who has been close with Howard since their childhood in Atlanta. "I know he's hurting right now. He's been with that team since day one. I would assume and expect he would stay there. But it's tough on him to see them get as close as they got two years ago and then fall back." ESPN.com |

Atlanta Hawks reserve forward Josh Powell was arrested before Saturday night's game at Philips Arena after police say he repeatedly refused to move his car that was blocking an ambulance. Atlanta Journal-Constitution The Riverdale High School graduate was charged with failure to obey an authorized officer directing traffic, failure to yield to emergency equipment and obstruction, Atlanta Police spokesman Curtis Davenport told the AJC. According to police, Powell was attempting to turn onto Park Avenue West from Marietta Street late Saturday afternoon but was unable to do so because of heavy traffic caused by this weekend's SEC basketball tournament. Powell's car was blocking the clogged intersection, making it impossible for the ambulance to proceed, Davenport said. "The officer approached Mr. Powell's vehicle and told him numerous times to go straight through the intersection ... [he] refused and was placed under arrest," Davenport said. Forward Josh Powell practiced Monday after Drew suspended him for Saturday's game for conduct detrimental to the team. The action followed a meeting between the two following the loss to New Orleans. "Everything is back to normal," Drew said. "It is not one of those situations of making it a prolonged thing. There are no grudges. I've still got to coach him; he's still my player. We will go back to business as usual." Atlanta Journal-Constitution |

It remains to be seen what good will come from the Lakers' parting ways with four players who knew the system and pushed the starters in practice and having four new faces at the end of the bench. Powell has received interest from several teams, including Chicago, Denver, Miami and Atlanta, according to league sources. Morrison has worked out for several teams in Las Vegas this week, including Washington, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, San Antonio and the Los Angeles Clippers. "It went really well," Morrison's agent, Mark Bartelstein, told ESPNLosAngeles.com of the workout. "A lot of teams are interested. I think we'll have something done shortly." ESPN.com |

The Lakers' remaining free agents -- Josh Powell, D.J. Mbenga and Adam Morrison -- all are considered unlikely to return to the team. However, Powell's agent, Jamie Knox, said he would contact the Lakers on Wednesday evening to try to gauge interest in his client, who was considered a leader in the locker room despite limited playing time last season. "The plan is to call the Lakers and try to get a feeling where they stand with what they have going on," Knox said. "I know that there's going to be an opening somewhere. Our best thing to do is just sit back and make the phone calls and see what's going on." ESPN.com |

It's impossible not to respect the work required for Powell to earn and keep a place in the NBA. His is a tough role, where minutes are inconsistent but performance is expected when they come and the natural, competitive desire for more playing time has to be balanced with the need for professionalism and team chemistry. As you'll see in the video, he'd like to remain a Laker. So would his teammates, but won't be that simple. Money has been a front-burner issue for the Lakers for a while, as they've cut costs around the organization and in the payroll whenever possible (trading Chris Mihm, flipping Vlad Radmanovic (not just about money, but not not about money), replacing Ronny Turiaf with Powell, etc.) while spending huge amounts on their high-end players.
