He remains optimistic and views Leandro Barbosa‘s late signing with the Boston Celtics and Eddy Curry signing with Dallas just days before the start of the season as hope that he’ll, too, soon find a new home. “Ultimately, I have to stay ready, which I am, as far as in the gym, and stay positive,” Howard said. “I don’t think my career’s over.” Other notable players still looking for a team: Guards: Derek Fisher, Gilbert Arenas (in talks with Chinese team), Baron Davis, Earl Boykins, Mickael Pietrus, Michael Redd, Maurice Evans, Jason Kapono. In five preseason appearances, Powell has averaged seven points and 5.2 rebounds, shooting 63.6 percent from the field. He also has proved to be an active defender. Though the team is under no obligation to begin the regular season with a full 15-man roster, Powell believes he has shown coach Gregg Popovich and general manager R.C. Buford enough to warrant consideration. “I think as long as I continue to play with energy, defend, rebound, communicate on defense and do those things, it’s giving me a good shot,” Powell said. “I just try to focus on that and do what the Spurs do traditionally.” San Antonio Express-News

Throughout the preseason, coach Gregg Popovich has deflected questions aimed at handicapping what the team plans to do with its final roster spot — assuming the team plans to fill it at all. The Spurs must make at least three more cuts before the start of the season. With Curry, Powell and Brown all contributing positive things in spurts, Popovich believes the final roster decision will go down to the wire. “I think it will take a while,” Popovich said. “A couple of those guys will make it to the very end, I would imagine, if they keep playing the way they are now.” San Antonio Express-News

Zhejiang Chouzhou, Smith’s team, was once positioned towards the top of the league, but have since slipped out of the playoff picture after losing six of their last eight. But, only one game out with a very easy remaining schedule, the Golden Bulls could very easily put themselves back in with a few wins. Smith leads the league in scoring with 34.2 points per game. Martin and Mills’ team, Xinjiang Guanghui, like Zhejiang Chouzhou, is also one game out of a post-season position. With five of their last seven games at home, a place where they’ve lost once all year, Xinjiang could also be in the playoffs as well. Two players who have not been mentioned thus far, Rodney Carney and Josh Powell, both of whom play for Liaoning Hengye, who are currently in fifth place at 14-11, would be playing playoff hoops if the season ended today. But their 2-9 road record will be under the microscope when they travel to play five of their last seven away from home, four of which are against teams with winning records. NiuBBall.com
