The Mavericks will probably sign a young player out of the D-League, rather than bring in a re-tread such as Mike Bibby, Earl Boykins, Michael Redd or Baron Davis. Among the possibilities is point guard Chris Wright, who has averaged 15.5 points and seven assists for Iowa of the D-League. Also, Texas Legends point guards Justin Dentmon and Sean Singletary are on the Mavericks’ radar. Dallas Morning News

Sometimes Justin Dentmon wants to strangle his cell phone. But like the rest of us, he can’t live without it. It’s just that so few of us experience the stomach-wrenching anxiety he does with each ring of an incoming call or beep of a text. “I feel like I’m on call every day, I’m waiting every day,” Dentmon said. “Every time Bill [Neff, his agent] calls and leaves a message, I’m thinking that it’s somebody calling for a contract. I’m really just trying to be patient.” But time is running short, on the the NBA season, on that elusive call-up and ultimately on the 6-foot point guard’s NBA dream. “I’m just hoping for that call-up, man,” Dentmon said. “Just the chance, the opportunity.” NBA.com

“I just really want to stay here, but playing here it seems like it keeps pushing me away,” Dentmon said. “I’m trying my hardest. Last year, I did a great job of playing the point and this year I’m playing a little bit of both, but it’s just tough, it’s tough.” NBA.com

“It all depends on if I’m getting any looks or if get called up this year,” he said. “If I don’t get any call-ups this year, maybe it’s telling me I need to go overseas for a little bit.” NBA.com

That there won’t be a lot of stories – or any stories – out of training camp next fall on the pluckiness of Justin Dentmon or Ben Uzoh and their fight to make the team off solid showings under 10-day deals this spring. Now, both of ‘em seem to be good kids who are just trying to make a buck and an impression and while they are earning money, they aren’t doing anything to guarantee further Toronto employment. Sometimes you get 10-day guys who can make a mark, sometimes you get guys who are placeholders. Which is what they got. Nothing against either of them but we’re finding out just how big the chasm between the minors and the majors is. Toronto Star
