Dahntay Jones, who was outside the locker room with teammate Paul George, a Pacers employee, his son and his mother, went and talked to Howard before the 39-year-old Howard turned around and went toward the practice court with the rest of his teammates. “Tell him I’m going to (expletive) him up,” Howard said to Dahntay Jones, Paul George and another Pacers employee. It was unclear which player had said something to start the jawing, but Howard was soon warning Stephenson to keep his mouth shut, as Pacers assistant coach Brian Shaw stepped between the players and nudged Howard away from the court. There didn’t appear to be any possibility that the altercation would evolve into violence, but Howard clearly had no use for Stephenson, nor his attitude. Yahoo! Sports

The Blazers locker room had McMillan detractors previously during the coach's seven seasons in Portland. But there was always someone -- be it James Jones, Joel Przybilla, Brandon Roy or Juwan Howard -- to extinguish the fires and remind teammates that personal agendas never trump the team. It's why I cornered LaMarcus Aldridge shortly after McMillan was fired. I told him that I was disappointed in him. I said that part of the responsibility of being a star is leading. I expected him to tell Felton to zip it when the point guard was making his poisonous locker room rounds. I expected him to tell Crawford to quit worrying about where he was playing and focus on how he was playing. As not only a star but an All-Star, it was his job to get guys focused on the team. Miami Heat forward Juwan Howard has phoned Chris Webber during the NBA Finals. He's sent text messages to Jalen Rose. Although their careers are at opposite ends, the conversation remains the same. Howard is not only in position to win a championship with the Heat, but also capture a trophy for one of college basketball's most celebrated teams. He is the last active member of Michigan's Fab Five, and stands just two victories from winning one for the group. The Heat trail the Dallas Mavericks 3-2 in the best-of-7 series. "You know what, if I win a championship, the family wins one," Howard said. "Because we're all like family. I know Jalen told you guys before the season started that if I win one, it's like he's going to win one. He's going to wear the ring, too." South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Terry also expressed an interesting opinion about Chris Bosh's game-winning jumper. "Well, it was a blown coverage," Terry said. "That's what was disappointing about it. We don't care who gets that shot at that particular time, but it wasn't contested. When it's wide open, anybody, I don't care who it is, Juwan Howard would have hit that shot." While he has been featured in a limited role this season, Howard is a strong presence in the locker room. "He's been invaluable, to this group in particular, because of his veteran experience and his leadership," Erik Spoelstra said. "The guys respect him and they did from the very first day of training camp." After ESPN aired their Fab Five documentary in March, Howard's legend continued to grow in the locker room. "It even went to another level," Spoelstra said with a laugh. "Everybody knew he was a Fab Five guy. A lot of our players were big fans of that team and when the special came out, that kind of highlighted him even more in their eyes." HoopsWorld

The reason he's able to be effective, even when his minutes are fluctuating, is because he does an excellent job preparing for games. He approaches every night with the mindset that he'll play, and he has been in just about every situation so nothing fazes him when he steps onto the court. "It's about staying ready," Howard said. "You never know when your name is going to be called so you approach every game like you're a rotation player. You prepare like I'm going to play night in and night out. There are going to be some nights where they don't play you and some nights where they do, but you got to be ready. You're going to embarrass yourself if you're not." HoopsWorld

They might be small and inexpensive or large and valuable. No occasion is needed to spur these moments of disarming generosity. Nor do they come with the expectation of public thanks or reciprocation. This, it seems, is just part of being a teammate of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. "Those two," says Heat backup forward James Jones, "are special." Might be an iPod or a pair of headphones. Might be a box of sneakers or a flashy warmup suit. "Things that guys like us use," Jones says on the eve of the NBA Finals. "Special gifts," says Juwan Howard, the Heat's oldest player. South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Miami Heat forward Juwan Howard said Friday he plans to appeal his $35,000 NBA fine for his involvement in Wednesday's melee against the Washington Wizards. Howard was ejected in the second quarter of the 123-107 victory at the Verizon Center for a shoving match after a dustup between Heat center Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Wizards guard John Wall, who also were ejected. "I wouldn't regret doing it if I had to do it again," said Howard, who said he merely was trying to protect a teammate. "Unfortunately, I just thought that the penalty was very harsh."
