HoopsHype Kaleb Canales rumors

But it’s his most recent stop, with Dallas, that is generating the biggest buzz among Blazers players. Stotts was a key member of coach Rick Carlisle’s staff during the Mavericks’ run to the 2011 NBA Championship, which featured a first-round Western Conference playoff victory over the Blazers. “I’ve never formally met him, so I don’t know him,” second-year Blazers guard Nolan Smith said. “But I know he was on the World Championship team with the Mavericks. I know he knows what it takes to win.” Oregonian

I think the job has been Kaleb's all along. And I think Stotts, while a very worthy candidate, is being thrown into the mix (remember, he's a Warren Legarie client) to bring him back into the discussion for future head coaching jobs. Meanwhile, all the candidates that were interviewed -- the dog-and-pony show that included more than a dozen people -- does nothing, at least to Blazer Nation, but validate Canales as a candidate. At least that would be the hope. CSNNW.com

Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Terry Stotts and Portland Trail Blazers interim head coach Kaleb Canales are traveling to London this weekend to meet with owner Paul Allen in what will be the final phase of interviews to determine who will be the Trail Blazers next head coach, CSNNW.com has learned. A decision is expected soon after in order to fill out the rest of the coaching staff in a timely fashion. Tuesday, the Trail Blazers finished up round two of the interview process. General manager Neil Olshey and his brass met with Stotts and former Orlando Magic assistant coach Steve Clifford on Monday and on Tuesday, met with Canales and Phoenix Suns assistant Elston Turner. The Blazers on Wednesday eliminated Steve Clifford and Elston Turner and will now focus on Stotts, the Dallas assistant who has been a head coach in Atlanta and Milwaukee, and Canales, the 34-year-old former video coordinator who coached the Blazers on an interim basis last season after Nate McMillan was fired. No timeline has been set by the team to make a hire. Oregonian

Portland's Kaleb Canales is the only NBA head coach from the 2011-12 season to take up the same position here in Las Vegas. That probably has something to do with the fact that all signs point to Canales, who took over for Nate McMillan with about two-thirds of the way through the regular season, taking a step back next season. A Comcast Sports Northwest report earlier this week indicated that new general manager Neil Olshey offered the head-coaching job to Phil Jackson and Jerry Sloan, but was turned down by both veteran coaches. When asked Saturday if he recieved an interview, Canales sidestepped the question, saying he was "focused on summer league." "I'm a Portland Trail Blazer and I've always going to be a Portland Trail Blazer," said Canales, who started with the team as a video intern in 2004. "I'm just going to continue to focus on working with our guys and helping them get better." ESPN.com
