Although Olshey did not offer names, if he goes the route of choosing an assistant, he is expected to consider Indiana's Brian Shaw, Golden State's Michael Malone, Miami's David Fizdale, Oklahoma City's Rex Kalamian, San Antonio's Mike Budenholzer and Memphis' Dave Joerger. Blazers assistant Kaleb Canales, who went 8-15 as interim coach last season after Nate McMillan was fired, is also expected to be a candidate. Canales will coach the Blazers' Summer League entrant, with help from Dan Dickau and Hersey Hawkins. Oregonian

Canales is not quite the "in-house" favorite Olshey declared him to be when took the job earlier this month. Olshey didn't speak specifically, but he did say Monday that the search would be "exhaustive" and that there are "guys we're targeting." Could Canales be one of those guys? Sure. But while much of the public may have thought this anyway, it doesn't quite appear to be his job to lose. Columbian

Kaleb Canales addressed the media Thursday for the first time since the Trail Blazers hired new general manager Neil Olshey, who called Canales the "in-house favorite" to be Portland's head coach during his first interaction with the press. Columbian

Canales, however, declined answering questions pertaining to his coaching future, imploring reporters to focus on the pre-draft workouts and save those queries for another time. Asked when that other time might be, Canales again redirected the focus toward the workouts. Columbian

Which leads me to believe that Kaleb Canales will become the team's permanent head coach. It is well documented that Canales and Olshey share the same agent – Warren LeGarie. I'm not ready to go conspiracy theory and say this is a LeGarie setup. It might be that Canales is the cheaper option. Nate McMillan is still owed roughly $7 million and the Trail Blazers executive staff has more employees than the average NBA team and adding cost might not be an option for Paul Allen. CSNNW.com

Also, in a somewhat surprising turn of events, the Trail Blazers are expected to conduct an open head coaching search after the draft. How open that search will be remains to be seen. New GM Neil Olshey had all but stated at his introductory news conference that the team would be sticking with interim coach Kaleb Canales, who shares the same agent with Olshey. But league sources say the team plans to interview other candidates, though probably not until after the draft. It would be somewhat unorthodox, but the Blazers seem to want to get their roster settled first before interviewing potential coaches. CBSSports.com
