"You guys got the roster ... You can do the math," Nelson said when asked about Haywood. "[But] that's not the only route to clear space." The amnesty clause allows teams to waive a player and not have his salary count against the cap. However, the player would still receive his salary. The Mavs also could renounce the rights to guard Vince Carter, center Brandan Wright and guard Kelenna Azubuike to clear space. Fort Worth Star-Telegram |

![]() The Dallas Mavericks signed swingman Kelenna Azubuike to fill the roster spot vacated by Thursday's release of Sean Williams. Although Azubuike hasn't played since early in the 2009-10 season because of a knee injury, Mavericks officials are intrigued by the progress Azubuike has made in his rehabilitation efforts, sources said. Azubuike will receive a deal for the rest of this season and a team option for next season, sources said. He will start his comeback with the Frisco-based Texas Legends, Dallas' D-League affiliate. He is expected to practice with the Legends on Friday and could play for them as early as Saturday night against the Reno Bighorns at home, sources said. ESPN.com "We like him as a player," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle told reporters in San Antonio on Friday morning following the team's shootaround. "The hope is that he can possibly help us this year. "He's an energetic, athletic guy that's a very good 3-point shooter. (He's) the kind of athlete that we're trying to find for our team." ESPN.com The Mavericks are close to signing former Golden State Warrior Kelenna Azubuike, presuming he can pass a physical, a source close to the situation said. Dallas Morning News |

Kelenna Azubuike is always accomodating when it comes to granting interviews, but at this point he's getting tired of the same question. "Very tired," he corrected. After watching him in the practice scrimmage today, however, I don't think you need to ask him how he and his surgically-repaired knee feels. It's visually evident that it's improved dramatically since the start of the season. He's still not impressively explosive or noticably athletic, but he doesn't stand out in a bad way, either. "I feel closer than I've ever been," Azubuike said as he walked off the court. What's more important is Mike D'Antoni, this time, agrees. "He's getting closer, that's for sure," D'Antoni said. "I didn't think he'd even get this close. We'll keep evaluating him and we'll see after the all- star break how he's doing and see if there's some opportunities to get him on the floor." Newsday |
