Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun is expected to announce his retirement at a news conference Thursday, multiple sources told ESPN.com. Calhoun, who coached the Huskies to three national titles, will be replaced by assistant coach Kevin Ollie, the sources said. ESPN.com
Chris Mannix: Kevin Ollie is enormously respected in both NBA and college circles. College HC, NBA HC, NBA GM, he could have written his own ticket Twitter
Allen offered no insight into Calhoun's future plans, but he said his former coach is in a good position with a talented roster and a solid coaching staff. Allen is especially excited to see Kevin Ollie on the bench, possibly being groomed as the next head coach. "He's always been a leader, just a natural leader," Allen said. "To me, he's always shown me the signs of what hard work looks like and overachieving. He's always put the pressure on me to work harder than what my talent level was capable of giving up. He's always pushed me, and I know he's done that to his guys, those young guys." Hartford Courant
Would Allen endorse Ollie as the next head coach? "When Coach decides to move on, I'd definitely like to see us stay in the family," Allen said. "Somebody who understands the history of not only the university and where we come from, but the players that have played there, the type of players that we have recruited, and just having a connection. Because I think that where we go in the future is directly connected to where we come from." Hartford Courant
The Connecticut men's basketball program took the first step toward cleansing itself of an NCAA investigation by hiring former player Kevin Ollie to be an assistant coach. Ollie, a 12-year NBA veteran, told ESPN.com in a text message Friday that he had signed a contract late Thursday night and would send in his retirement papers to the NBA office this weekend. ESPN.com
