Veteran point guards such as Kirk Hinrich, Andre Miller and John Lucas top the list of unrestricted free agents. Others, such as guards Jamal Crawford and C.J. Watson, could be available depending how their options play out. And there may be some sleepers out there, too, such as Indiana's A.J. Price. San Jose Mercury-News

Ever since the July 8, 2010, day the Bulls traded Kirk Hinrich essentially for extra salary-cap space to pursue the greatest free-agent class in NBA history, a segment of the fan base has clamored for his return. Hinrich, who still spends offseasons in the north suburban home he kept, will be an unrestricted free agent this summer for the first time in his nine-year career. So what about a Bulls return? "I wouldn't be opposed to it," Hinrich said. "It's still a ways away, and a lot can happen. We'll see. I have no preconceived thoughts on what will happen." Chicago Tribune

Los Angeles has also been pursuing Kirk Hinrich in recent weeks. The Lakers have been linked to Hinrich in the past and the Atlanta Hawks would move the veteran point guard if the right deal came along. The two teams have had conversations in recent weeks. Hinrich missed the first month of the season after recovering from shoulder surgery, but has been effective since returning. He’s currently backing up Jeff Teague and while his numbers don’t jump off the page, he does a good job managing Atlanta’s offense and he’s still a stellar perimeter defender. This season, Hinrich is averaging 4.9 points and 2.6 assists. HoopsWorld

If the Lakers can't make a splashy move for the elite point guard they crave -- a long shot at best at this point -- and can't swing a deal for top fallback choice Ramon Sessions, taking Hinrich and his $8.1 million salary into their $8.9 million Lamar Odom trade exception is a natural move to give L.A. some semblance of an upgrade in the backcourt going into the postseason. The Hawks, as always, want to reduce payroll and would gladly take a future draft pick back for Hinrich, who's no longer part of their plans. The Lakers, though, are rather skittish themselves about adding payroll these days, which is why they gave Odom away to the rival Mavericks in the first place and could actually prevent them from doing anything. L.A. would naturally want Atlanta to take back some salary in a Hinrich deal, but there's zero chance of that happening. So if the Lakers ultimately prove willing to use their trade exception on the likes of Hinrich or Toronto's Leandro Barbosa (who makes $7.6 million) -- and thus fortify a roster that, to quote Professor Hollinger, currently drops off from the top three to the rest like Niagra Falls -- they'll have to be willing to deal with the tax consequences. According to Drew, guard Kirk Hinrich is ahead of schedule in his return from November shoulder surgery. Hinrich has been doing some drill work with the team. “After you have the surgery, you feel yourself getting stronger every day, you improve faster,” Hinrich said. “Once you get to a certain point it gets harder to get that last 15-20 percent of your strength back. It’s a little bit frustrating but I’m doing every thing necessary.” Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The Hawks are looking to make some moves now that Al Horford is sidelined for three to four months. I’ve heard that they’re going to shop Kirk Hinrich’s expiring contract, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they listened to offers for Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and others. HoopsWorld

Hinrich had his eight-week checkup today. “Good news,” Hinrich said. “They are going to let me start doing all of the non-contact stuff with the team. A couple weeks from now, we will see how it goes from there. It’s one of those deals where I’m excited to do some things. Hopefully I can get my conditioning right and keep strengthening. I have some weakness. I need to get stronger before I get out there.” Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Former Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich, now with the Atlanta Hawks, hasn't been able to play in this Eastern Conference semifinal series because of a hamstring injury. But his replacement, 22-year-old Jeff Teague, is receiving helpful tips from the veteran Hinrich during this series. "He tells me to go out and play my game and little tips here and there when I am on the bench," Teague said Tuesday night. "He’s just a good teammate, a good guy to be around. He’s always positive." Atlanta Hawks guard Kirk Hinrich says his ailing right hamstring is finally starting to show some improvement. Hinrich was hurt in the closing minutes of a series-clinching win over Orlando. Second-year player Jeff Teague has filled in admirably, averaging 16 points a game against the Bulls with only five turnovers. He's a major reason the Eastern Conference semifinal is tied 2-2 heading into Game 5 at Chicago on Tuesday night. Hinrich says he's only doing "very simple" exercises but feels his hamstring is getting better. When asked if he could possibly return in this series, he says, “I don't want to rule anything out.” Chicago Tribune

Kirk Hinrich's roller-coaster season continued on Monday night when his significantly strained right hamstring sidelined him for Game 1. "I'm definitely still holding on to hope," Hinrich said, when asked if he could play for the Hawks later in the series. "I mean, you just never know. I'm just trying to concentrate my efforts on getting better and supporting my teammates." Chicago Tribune
