Missouri junior forwards Laurence Bowers and Kim English will return to school to play for new coach Frank Haith next year. The two starters declared for the NBA draft in early April on the same day the school hired Haith. Not hiring an agent allowed each to gauge their pro potential without losing college eligibility. University of Missouri forward Laurence Bowers announced that he has withdrawn his name from the 2011 NBA Draft and will return to Mizzou for his senior season. Bowers averaged 11.6 points and 6.1 rebounds for the Tigers last season as the team finished 23-11 and advanced to a third consecutive NCAA Tournament. “This has been a positive experience for me,” Laurence Bowers said. “I wanted to get some feedback on what areas of my game I needed to work on and that happened, but the bottom line is that I am looking forward to my senior season at Missouri. I have really enjoyed working with our new coaching staff and as a senior class we have a lot of great opportunities ahead of us.” Missourinet
When the list came out last week, Laurence Bowers was among the 69 players listed as early entry candidates for the 2011 NBA Draft. It's probably temporary, however, as the former St. George's player who just completed his junior season at Missouri, said he is likely to remove his name before Sunday's deadline so he can retain his eligibility for next season. "I felt like after my junior year, I had a pretty strong year to where I could actually test the waters and get feedback to where I am as a player," Bowers said. "I'm pretty positive that I will be coming back. I feel like it'll be best for me. It'll give me chance to build my stock, especially with there being no summer league and minimum workouts." On the very day Mizzou's prospective new basketball coach, Frank Haith from Miami, was to have his status voted on by the University of Missouri Board of Curators, Mizzou announced that juniors Laurence Bowers and Kim English would test the NBA draft. It was unclear when they made their decision, but neither is bound by the idea. As MU put it in a release, each could retain his eligibility and have the option of returning to Missouri if he does not retain an agent and chooses to remove his name from the draft by the May 8 deadline. "I think for anyone who plays college basketball, having a chance to play in the NBA is a dream," Bowers said, according to the MU statement. "I had a chance to talk with my family and other loved ones and this is something I want to do. This rule is in place to allow guys like us to explore their options and make an informed decision." stltoday.com
