But it would seem in order to find a place in the NBA, Harangody is going to have to develop a more consistent mid-range game or 3-point shot and that’s still not there. He’s 5-for-15 from behind the arc in his first five games with the Mad Ants. And with his lack of size, he has trouble making defensive stops in the lane. “I’m working on my outside shot, but that’s really no different than the work I do on the rest of my game,” Harangody said. “I think coaches always know what they’re gonna get from my game. I have to be more consistent at times. What I do out there is what they see — hustle, energy, getting on the glass. Just getting there and mixing it up for the team, doing the dirty work.” It’s consistent. It’s tough. It can be devastatingly effective in the D-League. But will it be enough to ever carve out a place in the NBA? NBA.com |

To many around the league, the Harangody qualifying offer was almost outlandish. It was worth $1.1 million. One agent said Harangody had two options at that point: 1. Play overseas; 2. Sign a make-good contract for the NBA minimum and try to make someone’s team in training camp. When the Cavs’ qualifying offer rolled off the fax machine in agent Mark Bartelstein’s office, they almost immediately accepted it. It might have been a record. One agent called it a “$1 million gift.” News-Herald |

NBA teams have until June 30 to tender qualifying offers to potential restricted free agents. The Cavs have three such players in center Semih Erden and forwards Alonzo Gee and Luke Harangody. They'll definitely give Gee a qualifying offer. He said he wants to return to the Cavs. Erden didn't sparkle last season and at times, he sat on the bench for long periods. Others are planned in Houston, Miami, Orlando and Atlanta. About 15 players showed up in Chicago, including Luke Harangody, Carl Landry, Ben Gordon and others. Earlier in the day, Hunter, Evans and other members of the union's traveling party met with a group of NBA player-agents in a downtown hotel ballroom. "Being a rookie last year and just learning about the league, this is obviously still new to me," said Harangody, a Cleveland Cavaliers forward from Notre Dame. "I've never been through a CBA before. All the uncertainty -- What's going to happen? Is there going to be a season? -- is definitely hard. "There were some deep questions and a lot of brainstorming about, like, what to do in the meantime while this is going on. I came out feeling that it was a very positive meeting." NBA.com |

With that in mind, a reporter asked Harangody if anyone in particular had wowed him in sheer stature, just as O'Neal was wandering behind him on his way out of the gym Friday. "Go ahead and say Shaq," O'Neal said with a smile. Harangody playfully fired back, "Shaq's a little overrated," as the big man walked out of earshot. "But, no, seriously, Shaq blows my mind everyday," admitted Harangody. "You can see it on TV, but when you see it in real life, it's just like, 'Wow.'" ESPN.com |
