HoopsHype Malcolm Thomas rumors

September 12, 2012 Updates

The Knicks’ front office has long been impressed with Thomas, but workouts on Wednesday and Thursday are meant to showcase the 23-year-old in front of the team's coaching staff. While New York added several players to its training camp roster on Tuesday, Thomas is vying for a guaranteed contract with the Knicks, who currently have one such slot available. Seeking guaranteed money, Thomas’ agency has made it clear that he will not sign a training camp deal. RealGM

Malcolm Thomas is on the verge of signing a contract with either an NBA or overseas club, agent Aaron Mintz told RealGM on Tuesday. “He’s close to a deal right now,” Mintz said. “There are a few different options.” Thomas was named to the Vegas Summer League All-Star team last month as a member of the Chicago Bulls, averaging 11.4 points and 12.4 rebounds over five games. Thomas, who played collegiately at San Diego State, showed that he could provide a high motor and sharp instincts offensively. RealGM

Malcolm Thomas shares an apartment at San Diego State with Kawhi Leonard, and he says they have talked about one day playing with or against each other in the NBA. “But there’s a difference,” Thomas said. “He’s a for-sure and I’m a hope-so.” Leonard has yet to declare for the NBA draft as an underclassman or formally hire an agent that would negate his remaining two seasons of collegiate eligibility, but Thomas considers both a mere formality. “I think he’s leaving,” Thomas said, “for sure.” San Diego Union-Tribune

Which is another way of saying that Thomas knows he’s not a first-round, 30-minutes-per-game prospect in the NBA, but a guy who practices hard and can give you 12 hard minutes off the bench. A role player instead of a pampered superstar. Blue collar, not white collar. There’s room for those guys in the NBA, too. “I think Malcolm can play in the NBA,” said CBS analyst Steve Kerr, a Rancho Santa Fe resident and the former general manager of the Phoenix Suns. “He’s got such great length. He may be a little light, but I see some Taj Gibson in him. He can guard multiple positions and block shots, and I think he’s got a chance to be an NBA player because of that unique ability to defend.” San Diego Union-Tribune
