Before their current three-game win streak, the Kings had lost three in a row and guard Marcus Thornton was playing some of his worst basketball. Coincidentally, the trade deadline was just around the corner and the Kings guard thought he was on the block. “I remember coming in trade deadline day,” said coach Smart to media following practice. “He said coach, ‘What time is it?’. And I said ’12:30′. He said, ‘What time is it out east?’ I said ‘Is that what this is all about? Is that what you had been thinking for over a week?’” Cowbell Kingdom

Before the deadline, Thornton averaged just 10 points and shot 31.2 percent from beyond the arc in the Kings’ three-game skid. Since then, he’s scored 30 or more points and shot above 50 percent from deep in two of the Kings’ last three games. “It was just trade deadline,” said Thornton, who added that a cold contributed to his poor play last week. “Everybody gets cautious at the trade deadline. It was on everybody’s mind. But that’s over with. It’s a new week, new day, glad to be a King.” Cowbell Kingdom

Guard Marcus Thornton (left thigh hematoma) said he wants to play Thursday against the Portland Trail Blazers, but that the decision will be up to team doctors. Thornton has missed the Kings' last four games. The team announced on Jan. 25 that tests had revealed a significant hematoma in his left thigh, and that Thornton would miss one to two weeks. Thornton participated full-contact during the window of today's practice that was open to media -- a high-energy half-court scrimmage -- and appeared to be moving without much hesitation. Afterward, he said he "felt good out there for the most part." Sacramento Bee

“He’s family,” said Kings guard Marcus Thornton, who found the supposed request alarming. “He’s part of the team. That’s why I say after this is all over with, I’m going to give him a call and see what’s going on.” The starting center’s status remains up-in-the air for the Kings upcoming road trip to Memphis and Denver. However, veteran big man and recent free agent acquisition Chuck Hayes is optimistic Cousins will return. “I believe he’ll come around,” said Hayes, who’s taken it upon himself to mentor the young center this season. “He’s a competitor, he wants to play, he loves his game. I’m sure it’s eating him up that he’s at home and he has to sit there and watch instead of competing with his teammates. But that’s a decision that the office and the coaching staff, they’ll all have to come up with. And us as pros, we’re going to have to just go out there and perform.” Cowbell Kingdom

The Lakers on Monday were unable to get big enough efforts from either of their All-Stars, Kobe Bryant or Pau Gasol. Bryant (torn ligament in right wrist) and Gasol (sprained right shoulder) weren’t in their best shooting shape, and Gasol (15 points) was a non-factor early as the Lakers fell behind by nine at halftime. Asked about his shoulder after getting further treatment postgame, Gasol shrugged, looked back and said: “It’s still there.” Bryant never got hot. Despite turning to physical therapist Judy Seto for some help on the bench late in the third quarter, Bryant shot 10 for 24 from the field to get his 29 points and missed all four of his 3-point shots. The Lakers were a combined 1 for 16 on 3-pointers, with Derek Fisher missing three, including a key one in the fourth quarter. Lakers coach Mike Brown was most upset about the “very bad” pick-and-roll defense that gave Sacramento straight lines toward the hoop. Kings guard Marcus Thornton had 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting. About the defense, Bryant said: “It’ll kick in. I’m not sure when." Orange County Register

This is really a good chance for you to find a home and make your way in the NBA. You have a nice backcourt mate and a nice young nucleus. Talk to me a little bit about that. Sacramento is your home now. Marcus Thornton: It feels good. It feels good when you can go somewhere and you feel wanted and I appreciate the Kings everyday for that. As far as the backcourt, we are young – I love it. Me, Tyreke (Evans) and Jimmer (Fredette), we can get up and down the court. We’re young and we’re going to use that to our advantage. The Kings are determined to bring back Thornton and will likely do so, even as his agent, Tony Dutt, told SI.com this week that Thornton's former team, New Orleans, is among "four or five" interested clubs. SI.com

Although former LSU guard Marcus Thornton’s struggles’ in Hornets Coach Monty Williams’ system last season ultimately led to him being traded to Sacramento, New Orleans General Manager Dell Demps apparently is interested in giving Thornton another shot. Thornton’s agent, Tony Dutt, said he has had discussions this week with Demps, along with four other teams, including the Kings. Thornton is a restricted free agent, and Sacramento can match any offer he receives. Free agents can sign contracts beginning Friday. The Hornets traded Thornton, a fan favorite, last February to acquire forward Carl Landry, who is a free agent. The organization wasn’t pleased with Thornton’s development. Coach Monty Williams, who was in his first year with the team last year, said they had too many wing players, including Marco Belinelli and Willie Green, who are both free agents. ``I’m just ready to play,’’ Thornton said. ``I have worked on a lot of things that will make me better as a player.’’ New Orleans Times-Picayune

The Hornets are not likely to make a serious push to sign Thornton if they re-sign Belinelli or Green, sources said. It also would be unlikely they would aggressively pursue Thornton if the Hornets acquired an elite shooting guard in a trade involving All-Star point guard Chris Paul. The Hornets have only five players under contract with training camp is set to begin Friday at the Alario Center — Paul and backup point guard Jarrett Jack, forwards Trevor Ariza and Quincy Pondexter, and center Emeka Okafor, . ``It would not be a shock if Marcus came back here,’’ Pondexter, who is in his second year, said. ``I know that he’s from this area and was great at times when he was here. I think it’s a great possibility that it does happen. If he wants to play for us, we’re all going to welcome him back.’’ New Orleans Times-Picayune

Sacramento has more money to spend than the rest, an estimated $17 million required by opening night in order to reach the league's new minimum payroll. Among their likely additions, Kings restricted free agent guard Marcus Thornton remains a priority to re-sign. According to a source close to him, however, his former team, New Orleans, is among a group of "four or five" interested clubs. SI.com
