Celtics president Danny Ainge never had a chance to get to Thornton. He found out about the trade from a teammate who was also about to get shipped out — Tayshaun Prince. “Rumors, but I didn’t know until the last second,” Thornton said. “I put my phone down, Tayshaun picked his phone up and there it was. I was like, damn, I just put my phone down. That’s how fast it happened. I saw everything happening, and all of a sudden Tayshaun picks his up and says, ‘You gone.’ A crazy turn of events.” Boston Herald

There isn’t too much fishing going on along the local coast these days, but, several miles inland, Danny Ainge is chumming the trade waters from the Celtics offices. As of last night, there have been, according to several league sources, no bites, or even much of a nibble. The rest of the NBA has yet to make an earnest move toward the most prominent Boston bait. Available veterans Tayshaun Prince, Brandon Bass and Marcus Thornton are still of interest to a number of teams, but the Celts and those clubs have yet to engage in anything remotely resembling a substantive discussion. In this market, the Celtics have wares to offer. Tayshaun Prince, Brandon Bass and Marcus Thornton can all be had, and, while it’s hard to picture another club wanting to take on 32-year-old Gerald Wallace with $10.1 million left on his contract for 2015-16, at least one team in the Western Conference mix has been asking questions about him. Danny Ainge isn't all that different than most GMs when it comes to wanting to have lots of options in pulling off deals. That's why today is significant for the Celtics' president of basketball operations in his quest to get Boston's roster in order. Tyler Zeller and Marcus Thornton, both acquired via trade on July 10, are now eligible to be included in trades in which they can be paired with other Celtics players. CSNNE.com

Zeller's agent Sam Goldfeder said his client should also benefit from having a familiarity with Celtics head coach Brad Stevens who recruited both of his brothers. "Coach Stevens is someone the Zeller family thought a great deal about as a man," Goldfeder told CSNNE.com. "Forget about basketball. Everyone knows he's a great basketball coach. But they really liked him as a person. He's a good person and Tyler is also a good person. They share similar values off the court. I think that obviously, Brad expects excellence on the court, discipline, hard work and that's what Tyler is all about." CSNNE.com
