“It was frustrating, especially early when I started getting DNPs,” Brooks said. “It was frustrating, but we were winning ... and I haven’t been part of a winning team since my sophomore year in college (at Providence), and going back to high school. But obviously, I wanted a larger role. Then we started losing and I wasn’t playing, and that’s when it really started bothering me.” ESPN.com “It’s exciting in a way, to have the opportunity to start over,” Brooks said after scoring nine points in 20 minutes in the Nets’ 97-81 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday night, making a winner out of interim head coach P.J. Carlesimo in his debut. “For whatever reason, me and Avery didn’t really mesh too well. He wasn’t playing me that much, but he taught me a lot, and I’m just going to take (what I learned) to P.J.” ESPN.com ![]() Stefan Bondy: Spoke with MarShon yesterday, who is excited about a new opportunity after being buried on the bench under Avery. In his offseason conversations with Brooks, Johnson didn't stress offense. In fact, Johnson told him he didn't care if he picked up a basketball. His message: Hit the weight room. Brooks said he added about eight pounds to his still-willowy frame, which he anticipates will help him absorb contact from defenders. "This year," he said, "I can take the bump." Brooks is taking his share of them. Before an intrasquad scrimmage, teammates made him sing the national anthem. Williams also put Brooks "on probation" for fetching him hot chocolate with 10 marshmallows instead of eight, as requested. "He said he thought they would melt," Williams said. "I said, 'They're supposed to melt, that's the point.'" Wall Street Journal |

![]() The Brooklyn Nets have exercised the third-year contract option on MarShon Brooks, Nets General Manager Billy King announced today. Brooks is now signed through the 2013-14 season. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not released. Brooks was selected 25th overall by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft, and then traded to the Nets for the rights to the 27th pick, JuJuan Johnson, and the Nets’ 2014 second round pick. Last season the 6-5 guard appeared in 56 games, with 47 starts, averaging 12.6 points and 3.6 rebounds in 29 minutes per game. NBA.com ![]() After withstanding trade rumors, a poor performance in summer league and an injury to his right foot, MarShon Brooks seems to have lost whatever grip he had on the sixth-man role. The second-year guard, who the Nets refused to include in a deal with the Hawks for Joe Johnson, shed the walking boot precipitated by foot tendinitis and played for the first time in Thursday’s preseason game against the Celtics. But prior to the game, coach Avery Johnson refused to hand over what Brooks has expected – being the first man off the bench. “We’re not sure yet,” Johnson said. “We’re not going to box ourselves in.” New York Daily News Johnson wouldn’t commit to playing Brooks in Friday’s game against the 76ers, saying he’ll evaluate his status coming out of Thursday. Brooks set an offseason goal of building muscle on his slender frame. But Johnson indicated he’s still overmatched. “It’s been a tough camp for him overall,” Johnson said. “The players that he’s playing against everyday they’re just bigger and stronger.” New York Daily News |

MarShon Brooks, the Nets’ promising young sixth man, could miss most of the preseason schedule because of tendinitis in his right foot. Brooks wore a walking boot on Thursday and watched from the sidelines while his teammates played a simulated game. He is expected to wear the boot for another day or two and will then need another couple days of rehabilitation work. New York Times |

We saw no starters, nor MarShon Brooks. They no doubt were elsewhere. Deron Williams, accompanied by "my love," was in his family suite, purchased after he signed his deal. Talk about your givebacks! Avery Johnson with family in tow moved around, offering "great to be here, Hello Brooklyn" to all within range. He gave Childress, the first player to arrive, a hug and a big (is their any other kind?) Avery smile. Milton Lee was with his college pal Charlier and musician John Forte. Once inside, there were other celebrities, large and small, to ogle. Prokhorov in his seat, MSNBC host Toure' in our row. The concert started late (duh) but it was as anticipated, as advertised, historic. It opened with black and white historic photos flashed on the concert stage screen with the intensity and frequency picking up as it moved through the years, ending with 2012 and the arrival of the Brooklyn Nets. ![]() A young, outgoing NBA player traveling to Russia with his agent will receive a guided tour of Moscow from one of the world’s most eligible and wealthiest bachelors. Sounds like a comedy movie script, but it is part of what awaits the Nets’ MarShon Brooks when he leaves Tuesday to participate in the NBA-sponsored Basketball Without Borders Europe, which goes to Russia for the first time this week. The NBA, FIBA and Russian Basketball Federation have lined up current and former NBA players plus Russian legends for the Sept. 13-16 event, which features a camp for 50 of the top European prospects, hailing from more than 25 countries. New York Post And, of course, no basketball event in Russia could be complete without a connection to Nets billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov, who intends to show off Moscow to Brooks and his agent, Seth Cohen. “I’m excited, looking forward to going to Moscow with Seth and representing Nets Nation in our owner’s home country,” said Brooks, who also will attend a formal dinner at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow on the trip. In a nearly 17 minute interview with SLAM's Aggrey Sam, MarShon Brooks talks about the lessons he learned last season, what he expects next season from himself and his team. He leaves no doubt of his personal goal, "Sixth man of the year, sixth man of the year," he repeated with a smile. "I'm not going to sell myself short." Brooks also talks about how the team's versatility could open up some interesting possibilities for Brooklyn. "There might be a time where C.J. (Watson)'s at the one, D-Will is at the two, with me at the three," adding he thinks he could play some minutes at the point. "I think my passing ability and playmaking ability are underrated." He noted that so many of the Nets can play "two or more positions." NetsDaily |

In Harkless, the 15th pick in the June draft by Philadelphia, the Magic see a young player with serious potential to be their small forward of the future. In Vucevic, they see a versatile, smart big man entering the second year of his rookie contract who was a spot starter and improving player for the Sixers last season. Altogether, the chance to obtain young players who fit their vision while also netting the three first-round picks and two second-rounders appealed most to the Magic. Sources with knowledge of the talks said that wasn't the case with Brooklyn's most recent proposal. Before Brook Lopez's re-signing on July 11 ended the talks with the Nets because he could no longer be included in the deal, the Magic -- who had a chance to get four first-round picks (with Nets guard MarShon Brooks being traded to the Clippers, or some other third team, in exchange for one of the picks) -- had been against the idea of saddling their payroll with Lopez on a maximum contract (four years, $61 million) or, to a much lesser degree, power forward Kris Humphries on a deal that would guarantee him about $10 million next season. Most, if not all, of those picks would likely have all been late first- rounders based on any reasonable projections of the Nets' future (and that of the Clippers, if they had signed off on that deal). Jarrod Rudolph: Sources: New teams emerging as possible facilitators in Nets-Magic trade talks. Teams are high on MarShon Brooks, but cautious on Humphries. Twitter While Brooks remains openly available, the Cavs had little interest in him before last summer’s draft and don’t appear to be interested in acquiring him now, either. Brooks has the reputation of being a prolific scorer on dismal teams. He put up big numbers his senior year for a bad Providence team and averaged 12.6 points as a rookie on an equally bad Nets team. Questions remain about how effective a player and scorer he would be on a good team. The Cavaliers have remained quiet on all trade talks. “The Cavs are very tight-lipped,” one agent with a player involved in the talks said. “None of this is leaking from their end. I respect them for that.” Akron Beacon Journal |
