But sources told ESPN.com that the Nets fear that they'll be surrendering too much financial flexibility in the trade as currently structured, which has placed the deal in jeopardy. Another big stumbling block, sources said, is Atlanta's insistence that Brooklyn include promising Nets guard MarShon Brooks in the trade. ESPN.com

Brooks admitted he doesn’t have any idea as to what the two All-Star free agents will do when the free-agent signing period begins on July 1. “I haven’t talked to Gerald in a while, but [Williams] he’s still around lifting and things like that at the practice facility,” Brooks said at a Sprint NBA Nation event at South Street Seaport. “[Williams] is a tough guy to read. I really can’t control [whether or not they come back], that’s between them, their family and their agent.” New York Post

Whatever happened, Magic management evidently refused to buy Howard’s abrupt back flip until he signed a document opting in. That’s why, Thursday at noon, three hours before the deadline, Smith and Nets GM Billy King were real close to firming up a trade. No other team was involved. It would’ve been Brook Lopez, MarShon Brooks, Mehmet Okur’s expiring contract and two or three (lottery- unprotected; at least in one case) No. 1 picks for Howard. New York Post

“Nah, I actually just bought a couch,” Brooks said when asked about the possibility of being traded. “I think I’ll be around, but who knows? Seriously, I’m not nervous. “I’ve never been that guy,” he added. “I just go out and play and do my job. I haven’t been doing the best, so I don’t need any extra on my mind.” Newark Star-Ledger

Brooks averaged nearly 15.4 points on efficient .467 shooting before hurting his left Achilles tendon and missing three straight games. His return lasted just one game — Jan. 29 in Toronto — and then he missed the next six with a broken toe. In his last three appearances, he has averaged just 6.7 points and shot a scant .259. “I’ll shoot in the gym, that might help me,” Brooks said. “Getting shots up for three days, hopefully. It’s just confidence, just overthinking it. Believing in myself is not a problem. I’ve just got to see it go through the hole a couple times. I’ll be all right.’’ New York Post

Avery Johnson declined to offer an update on the status of the injured MarShon Brooks, other than to say the rookie guard is “out for the next couple of games, for sure.” The Nets coach promised to give an update on Brooks’ status “probably at some point this weekend.” Point guard Deron Williams, though, hinted that Brooks, who is out with a broken pinkie toe on his right foot, might be on the same timetable as Brook Lopez, who is still out with a broken bone in his right foot. “It seems like Brook and MarShon might come back around the same time, hopefully,” Williams said. The injury-ravaged Nets received more bad news yesterday when they learned rookie guard MarShon Brooks will be out for an undetermined amount of time with a fracture in his right pinky toe. Brooks arrived at yesterday’s practice with “some pretty significant swelling,” according to coach Avery Johnson before an X-ray revealed the injury. Brooks visited a foot specialist later in the day. Brooks, the team’s second-leading scorer, returned to play 22 minutes in Sunday night’s loss to the Raptors after missing three games with a sore left Achilles tendon, but Johnson said the injury was unrelated to Brooks’ previous affliction. An X-ray revealed Monday that rookie standout MarShon Brooks has a fractured pinky toe on his right foot and will be out for an indefinite period. The cause and time of the injury is unknown, and the Nets were holding off on a timetable for his recovery until after he sees a doctor. Following Sunday’s loss to the Raptors – when Brooks played 22 minutes after recovering from a sore Achilles heel on his other foot -- he came to the Nets practice facility with “significant swelling” on his toe, coach Avery Johnson said. “We think it could be something that happened some time ago. Sometimes, your toe is kinda sore and you don’t think much of it. But he came in this morning and we sent him in for an X-ray, and it is a fracture,” Johnson said. New York Daily News

We’ll have to wait until later today to find out if MarShon Brooks will play for the first time in a week. Brooks, who has missed the last three games with a sore left Achilles, is a game-time decision for tonight’s game against the Raptors (6 p.m.). Avery Johnson revealed that Brooks had some sort of injection Saturday. At first, Johnson was extremely vague, saying that Brooks had “little a procedure done.” But after some prodding Johnson revealed more. One reporter asked if Brooks had surgery, prompting Johnson to say, hilariously: “No, think. Now think! If he had surgery … He had an injection. We’ll leave it at that.” Bergen Record

Asked his level of concern about MarShon Brooks, who has missed three games with a problem with his Achilles’ tendon, Nets coach Avery Johnson said he will wait to see what tests Saturday reveal on Brooks before panicking. “We’re going to get him checked out again tomorrow, and then we’ll see where he is Sunday,” Johnson said. “If he’s not playing Sunday, then I’m going to start to get a little bit more concerned.” Newark Star-Ledger

MarShon Brooks’ MRI was negative, but his injury may be more serious than anticipated. Coach Avery Johnson expressed concern after ruling Brooks out of Wednesday’s game because of a sore Achilles, saying he doesn’t want to contribute to creating a recurring injury. “The main thing is it could get worse,” Johnson said. “And the Achilles is one of those other areas besides hamstring that I really just don’t like. I’ve seen those injuries go from bad to worse. Trainer (Tim Walsh) has seen those injuries go from bad to worse. So the main thing is we thought if we could get the kid to about 90 percent, it would allow him to play but he’s just not ready. And there’s too much discomfort there. So we’ll hope for Friday. He means so much to our program. We can’t put him out there in a detrimental position.” New York Daily News
