For all the good times, Kessler’s tenure at Adelphi was shadowed by a wrenching episode. His star center, Marshall Williams, collapsed and died on the court during a January 1977 game against Southampton, a victim of ventricular fibrillation, a heart disorder. Kessler told his players they did not have to continue their season, but they did so in tribute to their teammate and won the rest of their games. “Every time someone made a good pass or good shot, or took a charge, they’d say to each other, ‘Marshall, Marshall,’ ” Kessler told The New York Times in 1987. “Sometimes on the bench, tears came to my eyes.” New York Times

Marv Kessler, a wisecracking basketball guru who preached the fundamentals of the game in a half-century career that spanned high school, college and the NBA, has died. He was 82. He had been diagnosed with cancer several years ago and died Wednesday at NYU Medical Center, according to longtime friends. Wall Street Journal
