The recovery timeline announced by the Jazz would place Williams’ expected return date in early December, meaning he will miss training camp, preseason and roughly the first month of the 2013-14 regular season. Williams holds a player option worth $7.5 million for next season and he will surely be looking at a large per-year pay cut on his next deal. One would think the timing and severity of this surgery would make his free-agency decision a simple one: opt in, get fully healthy, finish next season strong and pursue a new contract next summer. The Jazz are clearly a team in transition this summer, as veterans Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap, Mo Williams and Randy Foye are all headed to unrestricted free agency while the organization’s younger faces — Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter, Alec Burks and Hayward — eagerly eye the possibility of larger roles next year and beyond. The biggest question with Utah Jazz small forward Marvin Williams this offseason was whether or not he'd exercise the player option on his contract for the 2013-14 season. The focus now has turned to his health. Williams will undergo surgery Monday in Charlotte, N.C., to repair his right Achilles tendon and sore right heel, which caused him to miss some action this past season. According to the Jazz, the expected rehabilitation and recovery time for Williams is about six months. That would have the small forward back in action around the beginning of December, about a month into the regular season. Deseret News Following several medical consultations, Jazz forward Marvin Williams has elected to have surgery to repair his sore right heel/Achilles tendon. The procedure will be performed on Monday, June 3 in Charlotte, N.C., by Dr. Robert Anderson, and Jazz assistant trainer Brian Zettler will accompany Williams. NBA.com |

![]() Bill Oram: Asked Marvin Williams about player option at end of season, said, "I haven't even thought about that." Likes SLC a lot. Twitter @tribjazz Bill Oram: Assuming he stays, Jazz will play Williams $7.5 million next year. He wouldn't get that much in free agency, would only make sense for him to opt out if he was truly uncomfortable/unhappy with the Jazz, which doesn't seem to be the case. Beyond that, any issues he has with team could be resolved with roster moves this offseason. 8 other guys are FAs. Lots of change coming. Twitter @tribjazz |

Marvin Williams doesn't view his move out of the starting lineup as a demotion. "I'm not a guy with an ego. I'm not an NFL quarterback," Williams said. "Whatever Coach feels like he needs to do. That's been my M.O. from Day 1. I've been criticized for that, but that's fine with me. I'll play to win, so if this helps us win, that's fine." Deseret News |

Did the trade catch up by surprise? Marvin Williams: I can’t necessarily say I was expecting it. I think anytime anybody is traded they are always surprised. It was just one of those things where I was working out and a couple of buddies of mine had told me they heard I got traded. During the summer time there are always rumors going around so I really didn’t pay too much attention. When I got done working out I had a couple voice mails from Rick Sund, my agent. I called Rick Sund back and he expressed to me that I may see it on TV or on Twitter but that I was going to be traded so he wanted to let me know firsthand. I greatly appreciated that. They did everything first class. They were awesome about the whole situation. When I got back to my house, I saw across the bottom of the (TV) screen that I got traded to Utah. Q. It was Rick Sund who called you? Not Danny Ferry? Marvin Williams: Actually Danny was on the line as well. I figured Rick reached out to me because he already knew me. I had never met Danny Ferry personally. I didn’t get a chance to speak to him when he got the job. Atlanta Journal-Constitution What are your thoughts about coming back to Atlanta? Marvin Williams: I’m really, really excited. A lot of those guys I haven’t seen or talked to since last season. Just to get a chance to get back to the city and see a lot of the people in the organization, see a lot of my friends, and I’m excited to get back there. Atlanta Journal-Constitution |

Williams is 26. The reliable outside shooter has averaged double digits every year he has played in the NBA except his rookie season. The Jazz acquired Williams in exchange for point guard Devin Harris to make room for newly acquired Mo Williams. An 18,000-seat community center bearing Williams’ name is being constructed in his hometown of Bremerton, Wash. Williams is content. "I don’t have to live up to anybody’s expectations but my own," he said. "I have to look at myself in the mirror every night. And when I do that, I’m very satisfied with where I came from and what I’m working toward." Salt Lake Tribune |

Jazz offseason additions of Mo Williams, Randy Foye and Marvin Williams: We got lucky. We got a ton of a great talent, especially with the veteran guys we've got coming in. We've got a lot of veteran guys, but we've also got a young nucleus. It helps us out in both facets. With those guys coming, we added a lot of ballhandling; we added some shooting; and a lot of leadership. Those guys are going to bring a lot to the table. Salt Lake Tribune |

![]() According to Ferry, the moves weren’t easy to make because of the solid contributions of Johnson and Williams over the years, but needed to be done to usher in a fresh start. “Difficult decision to make in moving guys of that caliber,” Ferry told HOOPSWORLD about making the Williams and Johnson deals. “I think the mindset was that we probably weren’t good enough and the status quo wasn’t going to make sense if that was the case.” HoopsWorld |
