Matt Bonner joined Sid Seixeiro on The Fan 590 in Toronto to discuss the Spurs’ superb, abbreviated regular season, while looking ahead to the playoffs. He also weighed in on Metta World Peace’s controversial elbow from the weekend and submitted his pick for the favorite out of the Eastern Conference. On his expectations going into the shortened season: “You know what? It was a lot of uncertainty. I wasn’t really sure how we would fare if it was one week of training camp, one or two preseason games and then right into the season. We got off to a little bit of a slow start — we were 12-9 at one point — but since then we left for our rodeo month-long road trip and we’ve been rolling ever since. And a big part of that is obviously the young guys that have stepped in — guys like Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green, and Tiago Splitter, in his second year, has really come into his own. And we made some good pickups with Stephen Jackson, Boris Diaw and Patty Mills, which has given us a lot of depth with this condensed schedule, let us manage minutes, and everybody’s contributing.” Sports Radio Interviews

On the Spurs exceeding expectations: “I think we’ve exceeded everyone’s expectations. Not that we don’t expect to go out and win every game, but it has been a great regular season. Luckily, we know all too well from last year that doesn’t translate into automatically advancing in the playoffs, so we understand that and if anything, going out in the first round last year is motivating us to be extra focused coming into this year. And we’re ready to go — we’re in rhythm, we’re healthy, we’re deep and we just wanna keep that going these last two games going into the first round.” Sports Radio Interviews

But it was still a scary situation — particularly with a demanding stretch of four games in five nights approaching. That’s where the scoresheet comes in and an interesting listing among the inactives buried deeply on the box score. Two names were listed: Bonner and Mills. Matt Bonner was out for the night with back spasms. Considering they don’t have a Mills on their roster, could it be an indication of an upcoming roster move? Or one that was already made? Monroe texted the Red Rocket soon after the National Basketball Players Association decertified this week, asking if he would consider playing elsewhere. Bonner, who was vice-president of the union, replied 'Possibly. I will definitely consider it.' telegraphjournal.com

Monroe went on to report that the 6-foot-10 San Antonio Spurs forward told him he had an in with the NBL's Halifax Rainmen - a friend who runs the team. That prompted this Facebook response from the Mill Rats: "The writer made an error and said the Halifax Rainmen where it should have read the Saint John Mill Rats." telegraphjournal.com

Matt Bonner: "One reporter came up to me and said – I asked Adam Silver to tell me one thing that is better for the players in their latest proposal and Adam Silver couldn’t think of one thing. We haven’t gained anything. We haven’t asked anything more. We’ve made compromises on every system issue. We’ve addressed their loses and it’s really frustrating that a deal hasn’t been closed out. It’s basically come down to the point where enough is enough. We need them to come to us on these last five or six system issues and we can get something done, but until that point we are not going to be intimidated by their ultimatum and everybody is on the same page. The players are all educated and know what’s at stake and what the issues are. We are going to stand united and stand strong.” Sports Radio Interviews

Asked if he had been promised any type of post-playing career work by anyone in the NBA, either directly or indirectly through other parties, Fisher shook his head no and started to speak, but was then interrupted by one of the union's vice presidents, Bucks guard Keyon Dooling, whose testimonial to Fisher was followed by similar sentiments from Wizards forward Mo Evans and Spurs forward Matt Bonner. "I think he's the best president we've ever had," Dooling said. "I think he's articulate enough to relay the message. I think he's tough enough to get his feet dirty, to get his hands dirty. He's on the ground level with us. It really pains me, because not only do I look at Derek as a leader, but I look at him as a mentor. To hear all the confusion and the things that's being written and said about him, and what it does for our fight and our cause, it does a lot of detriment. And that's not even the true internal battle. I don't think the battle is within our union ... I'm the first vice president. And I stand behind him, and I stand behind Mr. Hunter." NBA.com

Union vice president, and Spurs forward, Matt Bonner is one of the people charged with assessing the mood of the rank and file. He, for one, says the union is strong. "As disappointing as today is, we made progress," says Bonner, who is on the union's executive committee but was not in these small-group talks. "It's a process and hopefully it will continue again soon. In the meantime, I think the players are united and prepared to hold strong. We've made significant gives in every system issue and on BRI, so now it's the owners' turn to step up and make a move!" ESPN.com

Joining in on that was Spurs' forward Matt Bonner who was on TSN Radio. When asked if David Stern's lying, Bonner danced and jumped all around calling the commish a liar without actually doing it. “About certain things, yes. Lying is a strong word, mis-characterizing for sure. He talks about the owners, that he’s proud of the owners for the sacrifices they’ve made and the concessions they’ve made. They haven’t made a single concession. We haven’t asked for one thing more than what we had at the expiration of our last CBA. In fact, we haven’t even asked for any thing the same as the last CBA. We’ve made concessions on basically every front. … Despite that, they’re still anchored in at this extreme positions at both their split of the revenue and system issues.” CBSSports.com

Bonner heard the unsubstantiated rumor, proffered on Twitter after Thursday’s blowup, that Spurs owner Peter Holt told the players they hadn’t yet endured enough pain. Re- tweeted so often that it took on a life of its own, the quote was attributed only to an unnamed source but gained traction for a few hours, a veritable lifetime in cyberspace. “I never heard Peter say anything like that,” Bonner said. “Peter’s a really good guy, and he never loses his cool, and he’s always respectful.” San Antonio Express-News
